SAN DIEGO, CA — This December, Balboa Park’s iconic December Nights celebration is poised to elevate the holiday experience with the debut of Après Tavern, a European-inspired seasonal beer, wine, and specialty cocktail garden designed exclusively for adult festivalgoers. Opening Friday, December 5, and Saturday, December 6 in the historic Plaza de Panama, the new destination introduces a refined, warm, and festive gathering space at the heart of San Diego’s most beloved winter tradition.

Developed in partnership between the City of San Diego and The Shift Studio, Après Tavern brings the essence of a cozy alpine ski lodge directly to Southern California. Thoughtfully designed with rustic winter textures, soft ambient lighting, evergreen accents, and elegant décor, the venue invites guests to unwind in an atmosphere that blends European holiday charm with the vibrant cultural spirit of Balboa Park.

Each year, December Nights draws hundreds of thousands of visitors for its dazzling lights, live performances, global cuisine, and community-centered celebrations. With the introduction of Après Tavern, organizers aim to provide an elevated hospitality experience that complements the excitement of the festival while offering a place to relax, gather, and savor the season. This new addition is expected to become a centerpiece attraction, particularly for adults seeking a refined yet festive setting.

Guests can look forward to live entertainment throughout the weekend, highlighted by a special Saturday evening performance from international recording artist Frankie J., whose dynamic presence promises to set an uplifting, joyful tone within Plaza de Panama. The curated music lineup has been selected to enhance the warm, celebratory ambiance of the tavern, encouraging guests to linger, connect, and enjoy the energy of the holiday season.

The beverage menu has been carefully crafted to reflect the flavors of wintertime in Europe, featuring locally brewed craft beers, specialty meads, creative seasonal cocktails, and—most notably—Glühwein, the beloved mulled wine traditionally served at German and Austrian holiday markets. This signature drink, steeped in spices and served warm, has long been associated with winter gatherings and serves as the centerpiece of the Après Tavern beverage experience.

Complementing the drinks is a selection of artisanal winter comfort foods prepared to pair harmoniously with the beverage offerings. The menu includes sweet and savory crepes, European-style charcuterie boards, and roasted warm spiced nuts prepared in classic Old World fashion. Each item is designed to evoke a sense of tradition and comfort, reinforcing the feeling of being transported to a festive European mountain village.

However, Après Tavern is more than a culinary and beverage destination—it is envisioned as a community gathering space. Cozy lounge seating, communal tables, and winter-themed photo installations create areas for friends, couples, colleagues, and families to gather and share in the spirit of the season. Playful social elements such as giant Jenga, liar’s dice, and ring toss will be available, adding a lighthearted layer of interaction for guests who wish to relax and enjoy friendly engagement.

One of the most captivating aspects of the venue is its front-row view of the holiday projection displays cast across the grand façade of the San Diego Museum of Art. Visitors will be able to enjoy the stunning light shows from a warm and comfortable vantage point, creating an ideal setting for capturing memorable photos and celebrating special holiday moments.

Organizers emphasize that the creation of Après Tavern stems from a shared vision of elevating tradition while fostering community connection. “Our goal was to design a place where guests can experience the magic of December Nights in a more intimate and meaningful way,” said representatives from The Shift Studio. “Après Tavern encourages guests to slow down, raise a glass, celebrate with one another, and take in the beauty and joy of the season.”

Whether savoring a steaming cup of Glühwein under twinkling light displays, enjoying live musical performances with loved ones, or simply appreciating the warm atmosphere and festive energy, Après Tavern is positioned to become one of the most memorable new additions to December Nights.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as December Nights consistently attracts high attendance throughout the weekend. Additional festival information, including transportation guidance, performance schedules, and venue maps, can be found at: sandiego.gov/december-nights.
