San Diego, CA — In a rare behind-the-scenes experience, Amazon is inviting the public to step inside one of its most advanced facilities and witness the future of commerce in action. The company has officially launched free public tours at its massive Otay Mesa fulfillment center, giving visitors an unprecedented opportunity to see first-hand how robotics, automation, and human ingenuity come together to deliver millions of packages with remarkable speed and precision.

Located at 6971 Otay Mesa Road, this state-of-the-art facility is more than just a warehouse — it is a living example of Amazon’s relentless drive for innovation. Here, robotics and artificial intelligence merge seamlessly with human skill to redefine what is possible in modern logistics.

“We are thrilled to bring Amazon Tours to more customers around the world,” said Nick Boone-Lutz, Head of Amazon’s Public Tours Program. “These tours offer a unique opportunity to see our cutting-edge robotics and AI in action, and meet the incredible people who make it all possible.”

A Front-Row Seat to Tomorrow’s Technology

The free tours, available to visitors aged six and above, are scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Guided by experienced tour hosts, guests are immersed in the inner workings of the fulfillment process — from the moment an order is placed to the second it is ready for delivery.

Participants will encounter three groundbreaking robotic systems that are transforming the way Amazon fulfills orders:

  1. Mobile Drive Units (MDUs): These agile, self-guided machines glide across the warehouse floor, carrying towering shelves of products directly to ergonomic employee workstations. By eliminating the need for workers to walk long distances, MDUs drastically improve efficiency while reducing physical strain.
  2. Robotic Arms: Precision-engineered and remarkably fast, these robotic arms take on repetitive yet essential tasks such as picking, stowing, and sorting products. Working side-by-side with employees, they enhance productivity, maintain accuracy, and promote workplace safety.
  3. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs): These intelligent transporters move packages seamlessly across the facility, ensuring every parcel is routed quickly and accurately. By minimizing manual handling, AGVs help reduce risk and improve overall operational flow.

Driving Innovation with People at the Center

While the technology is dazzling, Amazon is careful to emphasize that innovation is about enhancing human potential, not replacing it. The robots serve as collaborative partners, taking on repetitive or physically demanding tasks so employees can focus on higher-value work that requires judgment, problem-solving, and care.

“Robotics and AI have allowed us to scale efficiency while making our workplaces safer and more ergonomic,” Boone-Lutz explained. “The combination of people and technology is what makes Amazon’s fulfillment network world-class.”

Why This Matters to San Diego and Beyond

For San Diego residents, the Otay Mesa fulfillment center represents more than a technological marvel — it is also a hub for economic growth and a symbol of the city’s connection to the future of global commerce. The presence of such an advanced logistics facility has created hundreds of jobs, attracted high-tech talent, and positioned the region as a leader in next-generation supply chain solutions.

Moreover, Amazon’s decision to open its doors to the public underscores its commitment to transparency and community engagement. By allowing visitors to see exactly how packages arrive at their doorsteps, the company is fostering trust and inspiring curiosity about the role of innovation in everyday life.

A Must-See Experience for Innovators, Students, and Families

The tours are designed to appeal to a broad audience — from tech enthusiasts and business leaders to students exploring STEM careers. Parents can bring their children to see how science and engineering translate into real-world applications, while educators can use the experience to spark classroom discussions on automation, logistics, and artificial intelligence.

In an era where the speed and reliability of delivery can define a customer experience, Amazon’s approach sets a benchmark for the industry. The Otay Mesa tours invite the public to explore how complex systems, cutting-edge robotics, and skilled human teams work together in harmony to meet the demands of a fast-moving world.

Tour reservations can be made online through Amazon’s official booking platform, and spots are expected to fill quickly due to high interest.

The Future, on Full Display

By opening the doors to its fulfillment center, Amazon is not just showcasing technology — it is offering a glimpse into the infrastructure that powers the modern economy. The message is clear: the future is here, and it is both automated and human-centered.

For San Diego, for Amazon, and for visitors of all ages, these tours are more than an educational outing. They are an invitation to see, touch, and understand the innovation shaping tomorrow’s world — and to leave inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead.
