How Steven L. Gray II is using barbering, mentorship and business ownership to inspire the next generation
For Steven L. Gray II, barbering has always been about more than haircuts. While many people see a barbershop as a place for grooming services, Gray views it as a space where confidence is built, relationships are formed and opportunities are created.

As the owner of Cali Coast Barbershop and founder of Dope Barber Brand, Gray has spent the past decade creating an environment where clients feel empowered both inside and outside the chair. His mission extends beyond providing quality grooming services. He is committed to mentorship, entrepreneurship and helping young people discover career paths that can lead to long-term success.
“Being ready is a myth,” Gray said. “You start. You suck. You figure it out. You get better.”
More Than a Haircut
Located in San Diego, Cali Coast Barbershop has become known for its professional atmosphere, consistency and commitment to customer service. Gray believes barbers play a unique role in helping people feel their best.
“Barbers are some of the pillars of the world’s confidence,” he said. “We help people look good, feel good and carry themselves with more confidence in their everyday lives.”

Through every appointment, Gray strives to create an experience that leaves clients feeling refreshed, motivated and prepared to face whatever challenges lie ahead. His clientele includes students, professionals, entrepreneurs, athletes and families from throughout the community.
Over the years, many customers have shared that the shop feels like more than a business. It has become a trusted gathering place where positive conversations, encouragement and personal growth often accompany a haircut.
Growing Through Adversity
Like many small business owners, Gray faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mandatory shutdowns created uncertainty for businesses across the country, including barbershops.
Rather than allowing those obstacles to define him, Gray used the experience as a lesson in resilience.
“The pandemic taught me discipline, adaptability and the importance of staying focused during adversity,” he said.
He also learned the value of budgeting, making sacrifices and maintaining a long-term perspective during slow business seasons. Those lessons continue to shape how he approaches entrepreneurship today.
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of Gray’s greatest passions is introducing young people to barbering and other skilled trades as viable career opportunities.

He is currently working with local high schools to help develop after-school barbering programs that expose students to entrepreneurship, professionalism and hands-on skills development.
Gray believes many young people are searching for direction and practical pathways toward financial independence. By providing mentorship and real-world exposure to barbering, he hopes to help students discover talents that can become lifelong careers.
Building a Legacy Through Business
In addition to operating Cali Coast Barbershop, Gray continues to expand Dope Barber Brand, a lifestyle clothing company inspired by barber culture, hard work, passion and dedication.
Looking ahead, his vision includes growing both businesses while increasing their impact on the community through mentorship, education and entrepreneurship.
“When God is your CEO, your business can’t fail,” Gray said.
For Gray, success is measured by more than revenue. It is about helping people build confidence, pursue their passions and recognize that skilled trades can create meaningful careers and lasting opportunities.
His story serves as a reminder that purpose often begins with a simple decision to believe in yourself and keep moving forward.
