Business intelligence can give companies access to more data than ever, but Charles Sutton believes access alone does not create value. The real test is whether leaders can understand the information, act on it and turn data into action. Through his work with BI That Delivers, Charles focuses on helping organizations turn raw data into useful insights and stronger decisions.
Turning Data Into a Clear Story

“Deliver a Better BI Experience”
Charles has worked in data and analytics for more than 15 years. During that time, he noticed a common problem: companies could spend months building reports, spreadsheets and dashboards that employees rarely used.
For Charles, the issue is not always a lack of data. It is often a gap between what the data shows and what people need to know.
He believes charts and tables alone may not explain what is happening in terms that people can easily understand. Instead, data should be shaped into a narrative that helps an audience understand what happened, why it matters and what action may come next.
That approach has helped shape Charles’ work in data communication.
Business Intelligence Starts With the Right Questions
Before creating a new data product, Charles focuses on the business problem that needs to be solved. His approach combines technology, analytics and business strategy with an emphasis on the people who will use the information.

The goal may be to increase profits, attract customers or lower costs. In each case, Charles believes the business objective should guide the data solution rather than allowing technology to become the goal itself.
“Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion,” Charles said.
However, his broader message is that data becomes more valuable when companies first know what questions they are trying to answer. Charles identifies business leaders, including directors, vice presidents and executives, as an important audience because they can establish expectations for how organizations analyze and communicate information.
Building a Career Through Learning
Charles’ professional path was not always clear. He described being lost in his early 20s and, for a period, sleeping in his car. A partner encouraged him to attend Miramar College, which helped him begin a different career path.

Today, Charles holds a master’s degree from Colorado State University, has completed multiple Microsoft training certifications and is a certified Agile product manager. He also produces educational articles, podcasts and videos focused on improving business intelligence outcomes.
Connecting Data to Business Results
Through BI That Delivers, Charles audits business intelligence environments and recommends ways companies can improve their data communication systems. His goal is to help organizations connect their data investments to business strategy and measurable return on investment.
For Charles, effective business intelligence ultimately comes back to a simple idea: companies should know what they want to accomplish before deciding what their data needs to tell them.
