National Doughnut Day, celebrated on the first Friday of June, is a delightful tradition that dates back to 1938. Established by the Salvation Army, it honors the “Donut Lassies,” volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. This year, San Diego County is buzzing with numerous events and giveaways to commemorate this sugary celebration.
One of the highlights is the Salvation Army’s Donut Festival at the USS Midway Museum, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday. Sponsored by BakeMark, the festival will feature a doughnut-decorating competition with a Midway theme, celebrating the museum’s 20th anniversary. Participating local shops include Barrio Donas, Peterson’s Donut Corner, and Donut Bar, among others. The public can enjoy free doughnuts, live entertainment, and vote for their favorite creation. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and wristbands are required for entry. Donations will benefit the Salvation Army.
Randy’s Donuts, a Los Angeles favorite, is celebrating the grand opening of its Chula Vista/Bonita location by giving away one free classic doughnut per customer from 6 a.m. to noon. The first 10 customers at the new store will also win free doughnuts for a year. Randy’s offers a variety of over 60 doughnut types, most priced under $3.
At Dodo Bird Donuts in La Jolla, owners Eric and Zoe Kleinbub will give a free doughnut to any customer who has worked in public service. Their menu includes classics like glazed and maple bacon, as well as unique flavors like mango Tajin and the sugar lemon lavender Cronut.
Krispy Kreme will join the celebration by offering one free regular doughnut per customer. Additionally, they’ll provide a dozen original glazed doughnuts for just $2 with the purchase of any dozen. Participating locations include Clairemont, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Oceanside, and Chula Vista.
Dunkin’ is offering one free classic doughnut with any drink purchase on Friday, while supplies last. Customers can visit various San Diego County locations to take advantage of this deal.
Lastly, Dinky Donut Shack in Coronado will host an “Around the World in 19 Donuts” challenge. Participants who taste all 19 miniature varieties can win a $100 Blue Bridge Hospitality gift card and become an “Honorary Dinky Donut Ambassador.”
With these sweet offerings, National Doughnut Day promises to be a delightful treat for everyone in San Diego County.
