San Diego Weekly San Diego Standouts | March 2026 Honoree

As a UC San Diego biology student and rare disease advocate, Devanshi Dubey is helping bring lived experience, mental health awareness, and empathy into conversations about chronic illness and the future of healthcare.
SAN DIEGO, Calif.
Some life paths begin with clear direction. Others begin with unanswered questions.
For Devanshi Dubey, the journey toward advocacy began long before she ever arrived in San Diego.

Growing up in India, Devanshi experienced severe respiratory symptoms throughout much of her childhood. Doctors treated the symptoms they could see, but the deeper cause remained unknown. Persistent coughing, hospital visits, and recurring illness became part of everyday life.
At one point she was even misdiagnosed with tuberculosis, a common assumption in regions where rare disease screening and genetic testing are not widely available.
For years, Devanshi lived without understanding why her health continued to decline.
Living in that kind of uncertainty changes how someone sees the world. It requires resilience before clarity. It demands patience without answers. It often forces people to grow stronger long before they understand why they must.
Yet Devanshi would later realize that those experiences were shaping something much larger.
“Strength is not meant to be compared, but it can always be shared.”
For Devanshi, resilience is not something to measure against others. Instead, strength becomes meaningful when people use their experiences to help others feel less alone.
That belief would later become a defining part of her work.
Where San Diego’s Medical Innovation Meets Patient Voice
San Diego, California is widely recognized as one of the leading hubs for biotechnology, healthcare innovation, and medical research in the United States.
Universities, hospitals, and research institutions across the region continue to push the boundaries of scientific discovery.
For Devanshi, living and studying within this environment has been transformative.
In 2021, she moved to San Diego to pursue a biology degree at UC San Diego.
Within her first quarter, Devanshi finally received the diagnosis that explained years of unexplained illness.
Cystic Fibrosis.
The rare genetic condition affects the lungs and digestive system and is typically diagnosed in infancy. For Devanshi, the answer arrived much later.

The diagnosis brought relief and grief at the same time.
Relief that her symptoms finally had an explanation.
Grief in understanding that the condition would be lifelong.
But there was also something new, access to specialized care and treatments that could dramatically improve her health.
For the first time in her life, Devanshi began experiencing what it felt like to breathe easier.
And with that clarity came a new realization.
Many people around the world still spend years searching for answers that never come.
“What began as my struggle slowly revealed itself as my purpose.”

A Personal Turning Point That Expanded Her Mission
Before receiving her diagnosis, Devanshi already knew she wanted to work in healthcare.
By the time she was thirteen years old, she dreamed of becoming a pulmonologist, someone who could help people experiencing respiratory illnesses like the ones she had faced growing up.
But once she received her diagnosis and began connecting with the cystic fibrosis community, her vision expanded beyond medicine alone.
She realized healthcare involves more than treating symptoms.

Patients living with chronic illness often navigate emotional struggles, identity shifts, and moments of isolation that medical systems sometimes overlook.
“Sometimes the very thing that breaks your life open becomes the reason you help others rebuild theirs.”
That realization inspired Devanshi to begin speaking openly about her experiences and advocating for greater awareness of chronic illness and mental health.
Leadership and Advocacy in Action

Today, Devanshi’s work sits at the intersection of science, lived experience, mental health advocacy, and patient-centered healthcare.
She currently serves as Chairperson of the Live Fearlessly Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering individuals living with cystic fibrosis to live active and fulfilling lives.
The foundation provides grants that help individuals pursue physical activity, education, travel, and experiences that support psychosocial well-being.
She has also spoken publicly at events like BreatheCon, encouraging others living with cystic fibrosis to advocate for themselves and their communities.
Through these efforts, Devanshi has become part of a broader movement working to humanize healthcare conversations.
“Healthcare becomes truly compassionate when it listens to the people living inside the data.”
For Devanshi, scientific progress and patient voice should not exist separately. Medicine becomes stronger when healthcare systems listen carefully to the experiences of those living with the conditions being studied.
Data tells part of the story.
Patients tell the rest.
Reclaiming Life Beyond Illness
One of the most powerful parts of Devanshi’s journey is how life after diagnosis opened new possibilities.
For years she felt limited by her health.
But once she received proper treatment, new opportunities began to appear.
In recent years Devanshi reached milestones she once believed were impossible.
She went skydiving from 13,000 feet.
She completed a seven-hour strenuous hike.
Devanshi ran her first 5K in May 2025, and her first 10K in February 2026.
To top it off, she just completed her first Half Marathon on March 15th, 2026 in NYC!
These accomplishments represent far more than physical achievements.
They represent reclaiming life after years of illness.
They are reminders that chronic illness does not define the limits of a person’s potential.

Supporting Others Living With Chronic Illness
Devanshi’s advocacy focuses especially on young adults living with chronic illness and rare diseases.
Many face invisible struggles.
Balancing treatment schedules with academic or professional responsibilities.
Managing uncertainty about the future.
Feeling misunderstood by people who cannot see the realities of their illness.
Mental health challenges such as anxiety, grief, and burnout often accompany these experiences.
Devanshi believes these emotional realities deserve far more attention.
“Behind every diagnosis is a life still dreaming, still hoping, still becoming.”
Redefining What Impact Means
For Devanshi, impact is not measured primarily through programs or statistics.
Instead, it is measured through moments.
Moments when someone hears her story and realizes they are not alone.
Moments when a patient finally feels understood.
Moments when someone says something simple but powerful.
“I thought I was the only one who felt this way.”
Those words remind Devanshi why advocacy matters.
“Sometimes the most powerful impact isn’t changing the whole world. It’s changing the world for the person standing in front of you.”

Looking Ahead
Devanshi hopes to expand awareness of chronic illness globally, particularly in regions where diagnosis and treatment remain limited.
She hopes to develop educational workshops for schools, universities, and workplaces to improve understanding of chronic illness and mental health.

Devanshi also plans to pursue graduate studies in health psychology, exploring the relationship between physical illness, emotional well-being, and support systems.
Her goal is to help create healthcare systems where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered.
Why Their Story Matters Now
Devanshi Dubey’s journey demonstrates how personal experiences can inspire broader change.
In San Diego, California, a region known for medical innovation, voices like Devanshi’s bring an essential perspective to healthcare conversations.
Her story reminds us that healthcare systems must listen not only to data, but also to the people living behind every diagnosis.
Her journey began with unanswered questions.
Today it continues as a voice of resilience, compassion, and hope for others navigating life with chronic illness.
Because sometimes the most meaningful leadership begins with one person deciding that their story can help someone else feel less alone.
