San Diego Weekly Standouts | March 2026 Honoree

Through Our Oasis Community, Dr. Sara Roldán is redefining healing by blending psychology, fandom, and storytelling into a powerful framework of belonging, identity, and transformation.
SAN DIEGO, Calif.
What if the parts of your life you tried to hide were never flaws?
What if they were the map?
Dr. Sara Roldán has built her life’s work around that question. Not as theory, but as a lived philosophy that challenges how we understand healing, identity, and belonging.
“If you had told me a lifetime ago that the keys to human healing were hidden within the vibrant landscapes of a video game or the rhythm of a comic book story, I might have smiled and returned to my work.”

“But life teaches us something deeper. We are not projects to be finished. We are masterpieces in progress.”
The Origin of Belonging
At the center of Sara’s work is a belief that reshapes how people see themselves.
“My why is the sacred belief that I belong.”
For many, fandom is seen as entertainment. For her, it is something far deeper.
“Fandom isn’t just a hobby. It is the connecting glue of our souls and a profound healing power.”
It is where people stop performing and start being.
It is where identity becomes safe.
It is where healing begins.
The Translator of Souls
Sara describes herself as a Social Alchemist and a Translator of Souls, working at the intersection of clinical science and modern mythology.
She carries three identities in her work:
The Healer
The Researcher
The Dreamer
Together, they allow her to translate trauma into belonging and isolation into connection.
“I take the starlight of your wildest dreams and the science of your deepest wounds and weave them into a sanctuary where you finally come home to yourself.”

Reclaiming the Misunderstood Protagonist
Sara’s work centers around individuals who feel like they do not fit neatly into the world around them.
She defines four archetypes:
The Misunderstood Protagonist
The Seeker of Belonging
The Wounded Warrior
The Digital Dreamer
These include BIPOC and immigrant communities, neurodivergent individuals, first responders, military members, and those with invisible disabilities.
People who have spent their lives trying to fit in, but have never felt at home.
The Hidden Struggle
What she identifies is deeper than stress or trauma.
It is fragmentation.
People feel like different versions of themselves in different spaces. They carry what she calls the Hero’s Burden, where everyone depends on them, but they have no one to lean on.
They have tried traditional solutions.
Rooms that felt disconnected.
Achievement that did not create belonging.
Escapism that numbed rather than healed.
Isolation disguised as strength.
“Even Superman has the Justice League. Even Spock has Kirk.”

Play to Belong
Sara’s philosophy reframes everything.
“We don’t play to escape reality. We play to find each other.”
Her Play to Belong framework transforms fandom into a healing tool rather than a distraction.
Video games, comics, and digital worlds become what she calls a Sacred Compass, guiding people through emotional healing and identity discovery.

“You are not broken. You are just in the wrong level.”
Building the Oasis
Through her work, Sara has created a Multiverse of Belonging across multiple platforms.
The Our Oasis Community Podcast serves as a guide for navigating life’s emotional landscapes.
The Our Oasis Community Academy mentors professionals and healers in building authentic, non-hustle-centered lives.
Her role as a professor at San Diego State University allows her to bring these ideas into academic spaces.
As a therapist and consultant, she designs inclusive environments where people feel safe, seen, and understood.
Her work also includes Community Architecture Consulting, where she helps organizations build safe, inclusive spaces both physically and digitally.
Applied Superhero Therapy
Sara’s work includes a unique framework known as Applied Superhero Therapy.
Instead of clinical language, she uses storytelling.
Spider Man becomes a lesson in responsibility and dignity.
Superman represents kindness and emotional safety.
Star Trek becomes a model for courage and exploration.
These stories become tools for emotional regulation, resilience, and self-worth.
A Vision Rooted in Inclusion
Her mission is to create sanctuaries for those who have never felt fully seen.
“Your weird is your wonder.”

She builds spaces where identity is not minimized, but celebrated. Where people do not have to choose between being professional and being themselves.
Signature Philosophy
“I play to belong. For me, fandom is the connecting glue and the healing power that proves we were never meant to walk this level alone.”
“With great power comes great responsibility, but the greatest responsibility we have is to be kind to the glitches in our own stories.”
“I am a translator of worlds, weaving science and story into a sanctuary where you come home to yourself.”

Why Her Story Matters Now
In a world more connected than ever, people are still searching for belonging.
More visible, yet less understood.
More accomplished, yet more fragmented.
Sara’s work answers that gap.
Because what she is building is not just therapy.
It is translation.
It is connection.
It is a reminder that the parts of ourselves we tried to hide are not mistakes.
They are the story.
And when we learn to read that story differently, we stop trying to survive the level.
We begin to play it.
Together.
