In an inspiring response to the growing food insecurity crisis, Feeding San Diego continues to provide hope for thousands of families through its school pantry program. As the cost of groceries continues to rise, this local nonprofit is doubling down on its mission to ensure no child goes hungry. By the end of this month, more than 11,000 families will receive essential food supplies through its expanding network of school-based pantries—a vital lifeline for many in San Diego County.
This week marks another milestone as Feeding San Diego launches four additional food pantries within local schools, bringing the total number of active pantries to 58. Despite this progress, the need remains staggering, with 27 schools still on the waitlist for their own pantries. According to Feeding San Diego, an estimated 100,000 children in the county experience hunger daily—a sobering reminder of the urgent need for community-driven solutions.
Addressing the Impact of Food Insecurity on Students
“The cost of groceries, especially healthy options, seems to climb every month,” said Brittany Daley, principal of Hamilton Elementary, which hosts one of Feeding San Diego’s food pantries. Daley sees firsthand how hunger affects her students. “You can’t learn if you’re hungry,” she added, her voice tinged with concern.
Feeding San Diego’s School Pantry Program ensures that families can access nutritious food twice a month, feeding approximately 11,500 households regularly. For Daley and many other educators, this initiative is not just about providing meals—it’s about empowering children to succeed in school and beyond.
Carissa Casares, Feeding San Diego’s Senior Communications Director, highlighted the broader economic challenges. “If you’re just getting by, think about families whose wages are stagnant and significantly lower. In the face of soaring grocery prices, food security is critical to fostering a thriving community,” she emphasized.
Expanding Access Amid Rising Demand
While Feeding San Diego’s efforts are making a meaningful impact, the waitlist of schools underscores the growing demand for support. The organization remains committed to closing this gap, fueled by a vision where every child has access to the food they need to thrive academically and personally.
Last year, Feeding San Diego distributed over 29 million meals to families in need, reinforcing its role as a pillar of support in the region. But the work is far from over. With rising costs and increasing demand, the nonprofit relies on community partnerships, donations, and volunteers to sustain and expand its programs.
Be Part of the Solution
As Feeding San Diego continues to address food insecurity across the region, the nonprofit invites individuals and businesses to join the mission. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, every contribution counts.
