When raging infernos swept through Los Angeles, San Diego-area firefighters answered the urgent call, demonstrating exceptional courage and resilience. Their selfless service not only saved countless homes but also lives, offering glimmers of hope amid devastation.
The frontline heroes, including Barona Fire Chief Ken Kremensky, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brent Pascua, and San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Nick Nava, shared firsthand accounts of the harrowing conditions they faced while battling the catastrophic blazes.
Facing the Firestorm
Describing the chaos of the Eaton Fire in Altadena, Chief Kremensky recalled, “It was already spreading from house to house, over streets, just running in the wind. It was crazy.” The situation resembled a scene out of a dystopian movie.
Similarly, Chief Pascua detailed the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades, stating, “It kind of looked like Armageddon those first couple of days.” The winds fanned the flames into a relentless inferno, making containment an uphill battle.
At the Hurst Fire in Sylmar, Chief Nava recounted the erratic fire behavior caused by powerful winds. “The winds created eddies and varying directions of fire, making it incredibly challenging to navigate and control.”
Lives on the Line
These firefighters put their lives in jeopardy as they confronted the unforgiving flames. Chief Pascua described navigating streets with homes ablaze on either side, remarking, “The flames were laying across the road instead of shooting upwards. It was like driving through a blowtorch.”
Chief Kremensky added, “The ember cast was incredible. Embers were flying everywhere, burning through our Nomex and leaving marks on us and our crew.” Despite the peril, their determination never wavered.
Saving Lives, Saving Hope

In the heart of the chaos, stories of heroism and hope emerged. Chief Kremensky’s strike team, comprising 21 firefighters from San Diego, Chula Vista, and San Miguel, saved numerous homes and residents trapped in their houses. “We got them out, into their vehicles, and safely away from the fire,” he shared.
For Chief Pascua, saving lives extended to rescuing pets. At the Palisades Fire, he broke through a resident’s door to rescue two dogs, reuniting them with their owner, Casey Colvin, days later. Colvin’s emotional reunion with his dog Oreo, who survived five nights in the rubble, went viral, symbolizing hope amid heartbreak.
“The love those dogs provide is more important than anything that was in that house,” Pascua said, reflecting on the profound impact of their mission.
Lessons from the Frontlines
These brave firefighters faced not only the flames but also the unpredictable forces of nature. Chief Nava emphasized, “The winds were shifty, and the terrain made it even harder to predict fire behavior.” Yet, their training and teamwork enabled them to overcome these challenges and prevent further destruction.
A Call to Action
The experiences of these firefighters underscore the importance of supporting our first responders. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting lives and property inspire us to act. Whether through community support, funding for fire departments, or advocating for improved safety measures, we can all contribute to making a difference.
As wildfires continue to pose a significant threat to California, the stories of these San Diego-area firefighters remind us of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of collective effort.
