This holiday season, the legendary Hotel del Coronado invites guests and visitors to immerse themselves in a world where history, imagination, and festive wonder converge. The iconic San Diego resort, recognized globally for its architectural splendor and timeless charm, is unveiling its captivating “Tinsel Trail to Oz,” a holiday celebration inspired by the beloved Oz universe. The experience illuminates the hotel’s historic ties to L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, offering guests an engaging journey through storytelling, heritage, and seasonal enchantment.

The “Tinsel Trail to Oz” is designed as a free, self-guided tour that leads guests down a shimmering Yellow Brick Road surrounded by thematic Christmas trees artfully placed throughout the hotel grounds. Each display reflects a chapter in the Oz narrative and the hotel’s distinctive role in shaping Baum’s creative vision. As visitors explore, they will find themselves transported into an atmosphere where literary history and holiday wonder blend seamlessly.

Although Hotel del Coronado has been celebrated for its role in film, culture, and social history, many are less familiar with its meaningful connection to Baum’s world of Oz. Baum, originally from New York and later a resident of South Dakota, frequently escaped to the serene coastal elegance of Hotel del Coronado during the winter months with his wife, Maud, and his mother-in-law, Matilda Joslyn Gage. Gage was a renowned suffragist and influential feminist leader, widely regarded as the inspiration behind the character of Glinda the Good Witch. These seasons of reflection and creativity led Baum to complete two of his Oz sequels at the hotel: Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz and The Road to Oz.

The hotel’s influence on Baum extended beyond the written word. He is credited with contributing design input to elements of the hotel interior, including the original chandeliers in the historic Coronet Room, demonstrating how the hotel’s artistic ambiance and architectural beauty stimulated his imagination.

This year’s “Tinsel Trail to Oz” invites guests to rediscover this literary legacy while celebrating the holidays in one of the nation’s most renowned beachfront destinations. Key highlights of the experience include:

  • The Road to Oz Tree: A grand two-story Christmas tree illuminated with 10,000 shimmering lights and adorned with over 2,000 ornaments. This spectacular tree stands as a festive tribute to the narrative journey of Dorothy and her companions.
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Tree: Located beside the hotel’s picturesque beachfront ice-skating rink, this display unites wintry fun with classic storytelling, offering a memorable backdrop for seasonal photos and family gatherings.

In the Garden Courtyard, the Yellow Brick Road becomes a lively promenade of holiday sights and flavors. Guests may stroll through the display, pause for seasonal beverages, and admire four striking twelve-foot trees lavishly decorated with imaginative Oz-inspired details. The atmosphere evokes joy, wonder, and the enduring message of Baum’s work: that adventure, courage, and heart can be found in every journey.

The “Tinsel Trail to Oz” is open to the public daily throughout the holiday season. Certain areas, including the Crown and Coronet Rooms, will have limited access on select dates in December. Visitors are encouraged to review the complete schedule on the Hotel del Coronado’s official website to plan their visit.

More than a visual celebration, this event highlights how cultural landmarks shape creative legacy. By illuminating Baum’s connection to the hotel, the Hotel del Coronado continues to honor its heritage while inviting new generations to experience the magic of imagination, tradition, and holiday celebration.

This season, guests are invited to step onto the Yellow Brick Road beachfront and rediscover the timeless wonder of Oz. The destination is familiar. The experience is extraordinary. The journey begins at the Hotel del Coronado.
