As the Los Angeles skyline continues to be enveloped in the aftermath of wildfires, smoke, chemicals, and airborne particulate matter create hazardous air conditions. With rising public awareness, the demand for effective air purifiers has skyrocketed, reflecting an urgent need for clean, breathable air.

According to Google Trends, searches for “air purifier for wildfire smoke” have surged over 5,000% in Los Angeles since the wildfires began. However, choosing the right air purifier and optimizing its use can make a significant difference in maintaining a safe indoor environment. Here’s what experts recommend.

Affordable Doesn’t Mean Ineffective

Many residents worry that safeguarding their air quality requires a substantial financial investment. However, Luke Montrose, assistant professor of environmental and radiological health sciences at Colorado State University, assures that affordable options can be highly effective.

“There’s a lot of gimmicky air purification systems out there, but for filtering particulate matter from smoke, any fan and filter will work,” Montrose explained.

This includes DIY solutions, such as a box fan combined with an HVAC particulate air filter, which are both cost-effective and efficient. However, he cautioned that such homemade devices can be vulnerable to damage from pets or children. For a more durable solution, investing in a professionally designed air purifier is a wise choice.

Prioritize HEPA Filters and Carbon Filters

Dr. Afif El-Hasan, an asthma and air quality expert with Kaiser Permanente Orange County, advises selecting air purifiers with both HEPA certification and carbon filters.

  • HEPA Filters: These high-efficiency particulate air filters remove 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, effectively trapping ash and other particulate matter.
  • Carbon Filters: These neutralize harmful chemicals released by burning synthetic materials like plastics and metals, a common occurrence in wildfire-affected areas.

“My preference is not just filtering the air but cleaning it as well,” Dr. El-Hasan emphasized.

Consider Coverage and Replacement Costs

Two critical factors to evaluate are the purifier’s coverage area and the cost of replacement filters.

“A seemingly affordable device that covers only a fraction of your room or has expensive replacement filters isn’t truly economical,” Dr. El-Hasan noted. To maximize value, ensure the purifier is appropriately sized for your most frequently used spaces and has reasonably priced filters.

Establish a Clean-Air Zone

Instead of attempting to purify the air throughout an entire home, experts recommend creating dedicated clean-air zones in key areas like bedrooms or home offices.

“If you have a 5,000-square-foot house, it’s impractical to purify every room,” Montrose advised. “Focus on areas where you spend the most time.”

Additional tips include:

  • Keeping windows and doors closed to maintain air quality.
  • Positioning a purifier near entry points where outdoor pollutants are likely to enter.

Regular Maintenance Is Essential

Filters must be replaced regularly to maintain peak performance, especially during periods of heightened air pollution.

Many air purifiers include indicators that signal when filters need replacement. However, during wildfire events, filters may deteriorate faster. Dr. El-Hasan recommends visually inspecting filters and replacing them when they appear dirty or discolored.

Don’t overlook central heating and cooling systems either—this is a great time to check and replace their filters as needed.

Tailor Protection to Individual Risk

Certain populations are at greater risk from poor air quality, including young children, seniors, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic respiratory conditions. For these groups, following air quality guidelines is especially crucial.

Stay informed by using resources like AirNow.gov or PurpleAir’s real-time maps to track local air conditions.

Embrace Action for Cleaner Air

In the face of increasing wildfire activity and deteriorating air quality, investing in an effective air purifier is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. From cost-effective solutions to advanced HEPA and carbon filters, the right air purification strategy can help protect your health and well-being.

Take control of your indoor air quality today and safeguard what matters most—your health and the health of your loved ones.
