The holiday season is synonymous with joy, generosity, and community spirit. This year, San Diego County Probation amplified the festive cheer as it hosted the much-loved annual event, Shop with a Cop, on December 7, 2024. The initiative brought together more than 300 children and over 30 local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, creating unforgettable memories and fostering connections that will last a lifetime.

Chief Probation Officer Tamika Nelson expressed heartfelt gratitude for the collaboration and joy that the event embodies. “Our officers and staff look forward to this event every year because it’s such a special opportunity to connect with the children in our communities,” she shared. “We were honored to host this year’s event and deeply appreciate the officers, staff, volunteers, and donors who made it all possible. Together, we’ve brought smiles to hundreds of faces, and that’s what the season is all about.”

A Tradition of Magic and Connection

Since its inception in 1994, Shop with a Cop has grown into a cherished tradition in San Diego County. This heartwarming initiative pairs children selected by local schools with law enforcement officers for a day of festive fun, mentorship, and generosity. The event underscores the dedication of officers to positively engage with the community beyond their official duties.

Participants started their day at SeaWorld San Diego, enjoying a delightful breakfast and a dolphin show designed exclusively for them. The atmosphere buzzed with laughter and awe as children marveled at the marine life spectacle. The festivities continued with a caravan to Target, where each child received a $200 gift card to shop for themselves and their families. Volunteers added an extra layer of holiday magic by wrapping gifts to ensure the children had surprises to share with loved ones.

Santa Claus made a special appearance, spreading more holiday cheer and posing for photos, leaving children with lasting memories of their magical day.

Collaboration Makes It Possible

The success of Shop with a Cop lies in the collective effort of its sponsors and volunteers. This year’s event was powered by local law enforcement agencies, SeaWorld, Target, and STAR/PAL, a nonprofit organization focused on fostering relationships between youth and law enforcement through mentoring and leadership programs.

Andy Wiese, Interim CEO of STAR/PAL, praised the San Diego County Probation team for their impeccable execution. “Probation did an amazing job as this year’s host agency. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and exceptional organization truly made the event unforgettable for the kids and the community,” he said.

Looking Ahead to 2025

The hosting duties for next year have been passed to the El Cajon Police Department, promising another chapter in this heartwarming tradition. With the continued support of generous donors, sponsors, and volunteers, the legacy of Shop with a Cop will undoubtedly grow stronger, inspiring goodwill and unity across San Diego County.

A Day of Inspiration and Impact

Events like Shop with a Cop remind us of the power of collaboration and the profound impact small acts of kindness can have on a community. They also highlight the commitment of law enforcement agencies to foster trust, understanding, and connection with the communities they serve.

As the holiday season unfolds, initiatives like these set the tone for what truly matters—building bridges, spreading joy, and creating a brighter future for the next generation. Join the movement, be inspired, and support your community. Together, we can make every season one to celebrate.
