LA JOLLA, CA — The San Diego International Film Festival delivered an unforgettable evening of cinematic celebration as acclaimed artists and cultural icons were honored during the esteemed Night of the Stars Tribute on October 16. The annual event, held at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla, brought together industry leaders, emerging voices, and film enthusiasts for a night dedicated to recognizing extraordinary talent and creative influence shaping the entertainment landscape today.
This year, the Festival highlighted four distinguished honorees whose work continues to inspire audiences across generations. Mark Hamill, internationally recognized for his legendary portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, received the Gregory Peck Award for Cinematic Excellence, a distinction named in honor of San Diego’s own Hollywood icon. Hamill’s enduring contributions to storytelling span over four decades across film, television, theatre, voice acting, and global pop culture. Most recently, he delivered a captivating performance in “The Life of Chuck”, directed by Mike Flanagan and starring opposite Tom Hiddleston—an audience award winner at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. His longstanding influence continues to shape both mainstream entertainment and the future of genre filmmaking.
Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin was presented with the Visionary Impact Award, recognizing her trailblazing legacy in advocating for both inclusion in the arts and the advancement of Deaf representation in entertainment. Matlin made cinematic history with her debut performance in Children of a Lesser God, earning an Academy Award and Golden Globe at just 21 years old. Her achievements since—including her role in the Academy Award-winning film “CODA”, which won Best Picture—have continued to cement her status as one of the most influential cultural leaders of her generation. With four Emmy nominations across acclaimed television productions such as The West Wing, Seinfeld, The L Word, and Switched at Birth, Matlin remains a voice of artistic excellence, advocacy, and transformation.
The Virtuoso Award honored acclaimed actor John Magaro, celebrated for his dynamic range and commitment to storytelling across film, stage, and television. Magaro’s recent portrayals include jazz icon Keith Jarrett in KÖLN 75, which premiered at the 2025 Berlinale, and a standout leading performance in Omaha, featured at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, he stars in the high-profile espionage series “The Agency” alongside Michael Fassbender, produced by George Clooney, further expanding his presence among the industry’s most compelling contemporary performers.
Meanwhile, actor and filmmaker Joe Manganiello received the Spotlight Award, recognizing his expanding influence both in front of and behind the camera. Known for his breakout performance in HBO’s True Blood, Manganiello has become a dynamic force across major film franchises including Magic Mike, Spider-Man, and Justice League. His recent projects include the Emmy-nominated Netflix film “Nonnas”, where he stars alongside Vince Vaughn in a heartfelt story centered around community, identity, and tradition. Manganiello is also set to join Season 2 of Netflix’s global-hit series “One Piece” as the formidable villain Crocodile—one of the year’s most anticipated casting announcements.
Tonya Mantooth, Chief Executive Officer and Artistic Director of the San Diego International Film Festival, emphasized the significance of the honorees’ influence on modern cinema:
“This year’s honorees represent the power of film to inspire, connect, and shape culture. Their work challenges us to think differently, embrace empathy, and expand the boundaries of storytelling. As we approach a new era in entertainment, their contributions reflect the heart of what this festival celebrates.”
The San Diego International Film Festival has built a longstanding reputation for championing artistic excellence, cultural innovation, and meaningful storytelling that sparks dialogue.
