A First Trip Into Mexico’s Boxing Scene
On May 30, 2026, I had the opportunity to experience my first live boxing event in Tijuana, Mexico, attending Mayhem Boxing at Arena Tecate. Along with a group of about ten friends, we crossed the border to support one of our favorite San Diego fighters, standout female boxer Carime Arriaga. While we made the trip to cheer on a familiar face, the evening quickly became much more than simply watching one fighter compete. It became an unforgettable introduction to the passion, tradition, and heart that have made Mexican boxing respected around the world.

From Dinner to Ringside Seats
Before making our way to the venue, our group gathered for dinner, sharing our excitement over what was ahead. As fight fans, we had all watched countless boxing matches on television, but nothing compared to the anticipation of witnessing the action in person. Once we arrived at Arena Tecate and found our seats in the VIP section just steps away from the ring, it became clear that this would be an entirely different experience.
Unlike watching a fight through a television screen, every moment inside the arena felt immediate. You could hear the sound of every punch landing cleanly, see the sweat fly through the air with every exchange, and feel the energy from the crowd rise as fighters traded combinations. Every round carried an intensity that simply cannot be replicated from home.

A Night Showcasing Tijuana’s Rising Talent
The Mayhem Boxing event featured a full card of 12 professional bouts, showcasing many of the top fighters from the Tijuana region alongside rising prospects determined to make a name for themselves. Each boxer entered the ring carrying years of training, sacrifice, and perseverance. For many of them, this wasn’t just another fight. It represented another opportunity to climb the rankings, provide for their families, and continue chasing the dream of competing on larger stages around the world.
That determination was evident from the opening bell of the first fight until the final decision of the night. Every competitor displayed tremendous toughness, refusing to back down regardless of the circumstances. One of the biggest lessons I took away from the event was how much heart every fighter possessed.

Heart, Determination, and the Will to Win
There were moments throughout the evening when it appeared a boxer had little chance of recovering after absorbing tremendous punishment during the opening rounds. Yet somehow they continued pressing forward, making adjustments, finding opportunities, and in some cases fighting their way back to earn unanimous decision victories. Those performances served as reminders that boxing is often decided just as much by mental toughness as physical ability.
Watching fighters refuse to quit, despite exhaustion and adversity, became one of the night’s most memorable takeaways. Their resilience demonstrated why boxing remains one of the world’s most demanding sports, testing not only physical ability but also discipline, courage, and perseverance.

Supporting One of Tijuana’s Own
While every matchup offered something memorable, our biggest reason for attending was to support Carime. Before the event, she took time to come over to greet us, thank us for making the trip, and take photos with our group. Despite the pressure of preparing for one of the biggest moments of her evening, she remained gracious and appreciative of everyone who had come to support her.
When it was finally her turn to enter the ring, our entire section came alive. Every punch she landed was met with cheers from our group as we proudly supported one of Tijuana’s own competing in one of boxing’s most respected cities.
Although Carime ultimately came up short by unanimous decision, the result did little to change how we felt about her performance. She fought with determination, represented herself with class, and demonstrated the courage it takes simply to step inside the ring. Wins and losses are part of every fighter’s career, but the willingness to compete against high-level opposition is something worthy of admiration. In our eyes, she’ll always be one of our favorite fighters, and we were grateful to have been there supporting her throughout the experience.

The Legacy of Mexican Boxing
As the evening continued, it became impossible not to appreciate what makes Mexican boxing so unique. The style is built upon relentless pressure, resilience, and an unwavering willingness to continue fighting regardless of the scorecards or adversity. Fighters refuse to quit, constantly moving forward and forcing their opponents to earn every second inside the ring.
That warrior mentality has become synonymous with Mexican boxing throughout history. Legendary champions such as Julio César Chávez, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and Oscar De La Hoya helped inspire generations of young athletes by demonstrating discipline, toughness, and pride every time they competed. Watching today’s fighters perform in Tijuana made it easy to understand how that tradition continues to thrive. The same fighting spirit that defined previous generations remains alive in the next wave of competitors chasing their own dreams.

More Than Just a Night of Fights
Beyond the action itself, the event offered an opportunity to experience another side of Tijuana’s rich sporting culture. The crowd was knowledgeable, passionate, and fully invested in every contest regardless of who was competing. Fans applauded displays of technical skill just as enthusiastically as dramatic exchanges, creating an atmosphere that celebrated the sport itself.
Following the final fight, our group continued the tradition that many visitors enjoy after crossing the border by stopping for tacos before heading home. Sitting together after an unforgettable night, we replayed our favorite moments from each fight, talked about Carime’s performance, and reflected on everything we had witnessed inside the arena. It was the perfect way to end an incredible evening.

A Tradition Worth Experiencing Again
Looking back, my first boxing event in Tijuana exceeded every expectation I had. It wasn’t simply about watching punches being thrown or seeing winners announced. It was about witnessing years of dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance come together under the bright lights of the ring. Every fighter competed knowing that each round could bring them one step closer to achieving their dreams.
Mayhem Boxing showcased exactly why Tijuana continues to be one of the world’s great boxing cities. The event celebrated not only talented athletes but also the culture, resilience, and determination that define Mexican boxing. After experiencing the atmosphere firsthand, I can confidently say this will not be my last boxing event in Mexico. I look forward to returning to Tijuana and exploring even more of the country’s rich boxing tradition in the years to come.
