The newly established Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox is set to revolutionize science, education, and innovation at UC San Diego. This state-of-the-art facility, developed in partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific and Nikon Instruments, brings cutting-edge technology across biological, physical, and health sciences under one roof. By enabling unprecedented access to advanced scientific tools, this hub is designed to address global challenges and stimulate innovation in crucial areas such as emerging diseases and human health risks.
The Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox, officially inaugurated on August 29, serves as a catalyst for collaborative research and education. Many of the advanced instruments housed in the Sandbox would be beyond the reach of individual researchers. However, this initiative democratizes access to such technologies, fostering collaboration among scientists across UC San Diego’s campus. Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla praised the facility’s potential, emphasizing that it will enable researchers to delve deeper into biological and physical sciences, advancing innovation at an accelerated pace.
Executive Vice Chancellor Elizabeth Simmons highlighted the Sandbox as a vital asset to the university’s mission of innovation and academic excellence. The facility not only enhances research capabilities but also opens doors for undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral scholars to engage in cutting-edge research and technology-based education.
Uri Manor, Assistant Professor and Faculty Director of the Sandbox, emphasized the transformative nature of the facility in offering students access to technologies typically unavailable at most universities. This exposure will enhance students’ ability to think critically and creatively in the scientific realm.
The Sandbox, led by the School of Biological Sciences and shaped by Professors Arshad Desai and Samara Reck-Peterson, is also a platform for industry collaboration. The facility was named in honor of a $7.5 million gift from David Goeddel, a UC San Diego alumnus and biotechnology leader. Through a partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific and Nikon Instruments, the Sandbox offers access to some of the world’s most advanced scientific instrumentation, including a Nikon Imaging Center.
Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Corinne Peek-Asa stressed the Sandbox’s role as more than a physical space, viewing it as a hub for collaboration and innovation. By providing researchers with access to cutting-edge tools, the facility is expected to lead to breakthroughs in medical treatments and technology, addressing pressing global health challenges.
To further support innovation, the university has introduced the Technology Sandbox Fellows Program, aimed at advancing the work of postdoctoral scholars and other scientists through research and training initiatives.
Located in Bonner Hall, a building with a rich history in molecular and cellular biology, the Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox houses technologies like cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). These advanced imaging techniques allow scientists to visualize biological processes at unprecedented precision by freezing samples and capturing detailed images. The Sandbox also features mass spectrometry tools, allowing for in-depth analysis of chemical and biological dynamics.
Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Senior Vice President, John Sos, underscored the significance of the partnership with UC San Diego, emphasizing the Sandbox’s role in fostering collaboration between academia and industry to solve complex scientific challenges.
By integrating diverse technologies in a shared space, the Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox promises to drive innovation in ways previously unimaginable. The facility’s suite of advanced tools will allow scientists to study biological systems from the molecular to the cellular level, offering fresh perspectives for drug design and medical research.
The collaborative environment within the Sandbox is expected to yield breakthroughs in both research and education. Professors and students alike will benefit from the opportunity to work with high-end technologies, propelling new discoveries that will shape the future of science and medicine.
As a cutting-edge hub of innovation, the Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox is poised to make a significant impact, not only at UC San Diego but on the global stage, advancing both scientific knowledge and educational opportunities.
