From weekly service in San Diego’s East County to humanitarian work across continents, Elana Levens-Craig has built a life defined by consistency, compassion, and a deeply held responsibility to others.
SAN DIEGO, Calif.
On Friday mornings in East County, there is a familiar rhythm to Elana Levens-Craig’s week. For the past five years, Elana has followed a regular Meals on Wheels route, returning again and again to the same clients, the same doors, and the same brief but meaningful moments of connection. Over time, what began as volunteer service has evolved into something far more personal. In Elana’s words, the people visited each week are now “part of my family.”
That sense of continuity defines the way Elana approaches service. Not as a series of isolated acts, but as a sustained commitment built through presence, reliability, and care.
Where It Began
Elana’s approach to service was shaped early.
Growing up in a household where volunteering was part of everyday life, Elana was introduced to the idea that contributing to the well-being of others is not something separate from daily routines. It is part of being engaged in a community.

Elana’s parents modeled that consistently, and the impact was lasting.
“I’m inspired by the chance to make a real difference in the world,” Elana Levens-Craig says. “My parents started me volunteering at a very young age, and I saw firsthand the difference even small acts of service could make in someone’s life.”
Elana also points to her father and her cultural upbringing as reinforcing that responsibility, shaping a mindset centered on giving back and caring for others.
Over time, travel added another layer to that foundation. Exposure to communities facing significant challenges, yet demonstrating resilience and gratitude, deepened Elana’s perspective.
“Traveling and seeing people who have so little yet radiate such joy reminds me how powerful resilience and gratitude can be,” Elana says. “The smiles on the faces of those I’m able to help stay with me long after the moment has passed.”
These experiences did not redirect Elana’s path.
They strengthened it.
A Life Guided by Responsibility and Purpose

At the center of Elana Levens-Craig’s work is a clearly defined set of values.
As a Jewish person, Elana embraces the concept of Tikkun Olam, meaning “repair the world.” This principle reflects a belief that individuals carry a responsibility to improve the lives of others through kindness, service, and action.
Elana describes being taught from a young age that contributing to the well-being of others is not optional. It is an expectation tied to community, identity, and responsibility.
“I want to make the world a better, happier place, one person at a time,” Elana Levens-Craig says.
That philosophy is reflected not in one defining effort, but in a consistent pattern of action across years.
The Discipline of Showing Up
A closer look at Elana’s schedule reveals that service is not occasional. It is structured.
In addition to weekly Meals on Wheels service, Sundays are spent serving brunch at St. Vincent de Paul through the Hunger Project.
Elana’s commitment also extends into long-standing family traditions. For more than 20 years, Elana, alongside her husband, children, and now grandchildren, has served during Thanksgiving and Christmas with the Salvation Army.
What began as a personal decision has become a multi-generational practice.
Service, in Elana’s life, is not episodic.
It is continuous.
Across Communities, One Need at a Time

Elana’s volunteer work spans a wide range of programs addressing different needs across the community.
At Las Colinas Detention and Re-entry Facility, Elana participates in Reading Legacies, a program that allows incarcerated parents to record themselves reading books for their children, preserving connection despite separation.
Each month, Elana serves at the Salvation Army Family BBQ, helping provide more than 600 meals to individuals and families facing food insecurity.
Elana also distributes food to military families at a local school where approximately 85 percent of students come from military households.
Through involvement with her synagogue, Elana contributes to collection drives for toiletries, school supplies, books, warm clothing, and blankets.
Elana serves meals through the Safe Parking Program, supporting individuals navigating housing insecurity.
On an annual basis, Elana participates in Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Feeding San Diego, the San Diego River Park Foundation, the Homeless Point in Time Count, Special Olympics, and the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Each effort addresses a different need.
Together, they reflect a consistent pattern of responding wherever support is required.
Regional Impact Through Rotary
Elana Levens-Craig is an active member of the Mission Valley Evening Rotary Club within Rotary District 5340, and Rotary plays a central role in expanding the reach of her service.
Through Rotary, Elana participates in cross-border initiatives across the Cali-Baja region, including one-day home builds in Tecate and Tijuana, as well as programs providing food, blankets, and clothing to families in underserved communities surrounding Ensenada.
These efforts reflect a regional understanding that community extends beyond geographic boundaries.

A Global Network, A Shared Responsibility
The work Elana does through Rotary is part of a broader global effort.
As outlined by Rotary International, it is a network of more than 1.2 million neighbors, friends, and community leaders working together to address some of the world’s most persistent challenges. Operating under the principle of Service Above Self, Rotary focuses on areas including peacebuilding, disease prevention, access to clean water, maternal and child health, education, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

For Elana, Rotary provides both structure and scale. It connects local service to a global framework and enables collaboration across communities and countries.

A Global Life of Service
Through Rotary and related initiatives, Elana’s work extends internationally.
Elana has traveled to India three times to help build catch dams in small villages.
Elana has participated in clean water projects in Colombia.
Elana has supported feeding programs in Ethiopia for students arriving at school without adequate nutrition.
Elana has contributed to initiatives in Kenya that provide menstrual products so girls can remain in school.
Elana has participated in a camp in Lithuania for Ukrainian children seeking relief from the effects of war.
Elana has engaged in educational programs in Guatemala and Cambodia aimed at breaking cycles of poverty.
Elana has also sponsored girls in these countries, supporting their continued access to education.
“Everywhere I go, I look for opportunities to help those around me, in ways big and small,” Elana Levens-Craig says.
Across each location, the objective remains consistent.
Provide practical support that creates lasting impact.
The Connector

In addition to direct service, Elana plays a key role in connecting others to opportunities.
Elana describes an ideal “client” as someone who has a heart for service but does not know where to begin. Many people, Elana notes, want to volunteer but lack awareness of available opportunities.
“I believe that I am unique in that I am a connector of people,” Elana Levens-Craig says.
With experience as an educator, business owner, and elected official, Elana helps guide individuals toward meaningful ways to contribute.
In doing so, the impact extends beyond individual effort and becomes collective.
The Outlook Behind the Work
Elana offers a personal perspective that reflects the tone behind her work.
“My husband says I live in Elanaland. I love it there,” Elana Levens-Craig says.
Elana describes Elanaland as a place where people are kind, where connection is natural, and where others are treated as friends.
While the description is lighthearted, it reflects a deliberate outlook rooted in optimism and human connection.
Why It Matters
Elana Levens-Craig’s story is not defined by a single program or initiative. It reflects a sustained commitment across weekly, monthly, annual, local, regional, and global efforts.
It is guided by family influence, cultural values, and a belief in responsibility to others.
It is reinforced through consistency.
And it expands through connection.

Looking Ahead
Elana’s focus moving forward remains clear.
To help individuals who want to volunteer find opportunities that align with their interests and availability.
To continue building connections between people and service.
And to keep making the world better, one person at a time.
