After a brief hiatus, the much-anticipated San Diego Comic Fest is back, and this time, it is moving to North County. Often overshadowed by its larger counterpart, San Diego Comic-Con, the Comic Fest has carved out its own niche as a unique, intimate celebration of comic culture. Unlike the mega-convention, Comic Fest is designed to stay small and personal, providing an experience that recalls the early days of San Diego Comic-Con. This weekend’s return marks an exciting chapter for the event, with new themes, a fresh location, and a continued commitment to honoring the art of comics.
A Return to Intimacy
San Diego Comic Fest prides itself on being a smaller-scale convention, bringing fans closer to the essence of comic culture. As Alonso Nunez, board president of Comic Fest, explains, the event was created to foster a grassroots, personal connection between fans and creators. Nunez notes, “For a pure grassroots comic experience, there’s nothing quite like San Diego Comic Fest. It was started by Mike Towry, one of the original founders of Comic-Con, in 2012. After a brief break to raise funds post-pandemic, we’re back, and stronger than ever.”
With its return, the Comic Fest offers a more relaxed environment, allowing attendees to connect directly with artists, writers, and other industry professionals without the long lines typical of larger conventions. It’s a place where the love of comics is front and center, and the focus is on fostering community and creativity.
A New Venue in North County
In its 2024 iteration, San Diego Comic Fest will be held at a new venue—the Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa—marking a significant shift from its traditional location in central San Diego. Nunez highlights the logistical challenges that led to the venue change, including rising post-pandemic costs and a limited number of available locations in the city.
However, this move to North County is seen as a positive change. The new location is not only closer to Anaheim, making it more accessible to fans from Orange County, but it also places the event near Legoland. This proximity offers an opportunity for families to combine their love for comics with a vacation, creating a Comic Fest experience that mirrors Anaheim’s WonderCon, which is held near Disneyland. Nunez believes this strategic location will appeal to visitors who are looking for a fun, extended getaway.

Celebrating Icons of the Industry
Each year, San Diego Comic Fest selects key figures from the world of comics and entertainment to celebrate, and 2024 will honor two legendary creators: Harvey Kurtzman, founder of MAD Magazine, and Rod Serling, creator of “The Twilight Zone.”
Kurtzman is known for revolutionizing the world of satire and comics through his work with EC Comics in the 1950s and, later, MAD Magazine. Nunez emphasizes that the panels will dive deep into Kurtzman’s contributions, from his war comics to the risqué humor of his “Little Annie Fanny” series.
Similarly, Rod Serling’s profound influence on television and film will be explored through special events and screenings. Best known for “The Twilight Zone” and “Night Gallery,” Serling’s groundbreaking work in science fiction continues to resonate with audiences today. Panels will discuss his legacy, including his lesser-known contributions like the screenplay for “Planet of the Apes.”
These celebrations serve as a reminder of the ongoing impact that comics and related media have on culture. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with panel discussions, screenings, and interactive activities that showcase the work of these trailblazing creators.
A Comic Fest Like No Other
In addition to the main events, Comic Fest 2024 promises to offer a variety of experiences for attendees of all ages. From the artist alley and small press area to the game room and dealers’ room, the convention will emphasize comics while avoiding the overwhelming lines of larger conventions. For those who enjoy a more interactive experience, the popular “Drink and Draw” event will return, allowing attendees to grab a drink and create their own artwork in a relaxed, social setting. According to Nunez, “You never know what’s going to happen at a drink and draw.”
This year’s convention also reflects the enduring appeal of comic books as an art form. Nunez, who runs Little Fish Comic Book Studio and regularly serves as a judge for Comic-Con’s prestigious Eisner Awards, is passionate about the accessibility of comics. He highlights how comics, as an art form, remain one of the most approachable and creative mediums for both children and adults. The simplicity of comic creation—where all you need is paper and imagination—continues to inspire fans and artists alike.
A Celebration of Friendship and Community
San Diego Comic Fest offers more than just a place to celebrate comics; it provides a welcoming atmosphere where lifelong friendships can form. As Nunez states, “The true reward of comics is the friendships we find along the way.” Whether attendees are meeting new friends or reconnecting with old ones, Comic Fest fosters a sense of community that is often lost in larger conventions.
The 2024 San Diego Comic Fest will kick off with an opening night reception on Friday, October 25, and will run through Sunday, October 27. Don’t miss the chance to experience this intimate, friendly comic convention that is dedicated to the fans and the art form that brings them together.
