SAN DIEGO – Marking a significant milestone for military healthcare, the San Diego region has now been officially designated as the newest medical market under the Defense Health Agency (DHA). This development was formally commemorated in a ceremony held on August 10 at the Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), where U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Ronald Place, director of DHA, and Rear Adm. Tim Weber, San Diego Market director and commander of Naval Medical Forces Pacific, were in attendance. Consequently, the establishment of the San Diego Market signals a major transformation within the Military Health System (MHS), specifically advancing both medical readiness and patient care.

Earlier, on July 27, the Defense Health Agency certified the San Diego Market, placing it at the forefront of historic changes to military medicine. Furthermore, the new market structure fosters enhanced collaboration between military treatment facilities, thereby enabling more efficient healthcare delivery, optimized services, and a seamless patient experience. As a result, by standing up this new market, DHA is paving the way for more cohesive medical operations and superior care outcomes for service members and their families.

“A New Chapter for Military Medicine in San Diego”

“This is a pivotal moment for military medicine, especially for the San Diego community,” said Lt. Gen. Ronald Place. “Our medical teams at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, and associated clinics have been collaborating for years to provide exceptional care. Today’s ceremony marks a new chapter, formalizing this collaboration into a unified structure. This reaffirms our commitment to the health and wellbeing of the men and women serving our nation.”

The San Diego Market now assumes responsibility for providing medical services to over 357,000 eligible Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Army service members, along with their families and retirees. This includes two major medical treatment facilities, 16 branch clinics, and 11 dental clinics. The transition of management from MHS to DHA brings a comprehensive and standardized approach to military healthcare, ensuring best practices and streamlined operations across all facilities. This reform effort is designed to enhance overall access to care for Department of Defense (DoD) beneficiaries.

Strengthening Healthcare Delivery for Service Members and Families

Rear Adm. Tim Weber echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of this new structure for delivering high-quality care. “We have built a robust healthcare system that equips our medical professionals with the training and expertise necessary to deliver world-class combat casualty care while maintaining the highest standards in our medical facilities,” said Weber. “Our talented and dedicated staff consistently deliver top-tier clinical care, improving the patient experience across the board. This is not just our duty, but our honor.”

The San Diego Market will function as a fully integrated healthcare system, promoting the sharing of resources, personnel, and knowledge across all facilities within the region. This strategic collaboration is aimed at increasing efficiency and ensuring that service members and their families receive the best possible care in both peacetime and during deployments.

A New Era of Coordination and Excellence

The establishment of the San Diego Market is part of a broader transition outlined in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act, which directs the Military Health System to transfer the management of military hospitals and clinics to DHA. This market-based approach builds on the success of six enhanced Multi-Service Markets already in operation. Markets are geographically organized networks of hospitals and clinics working in unison to share resources and provide more coordinated, patient-centered care. The San Diego Market is now poised to deliver on these objectives, advancing healthcare standards while supporting military readiness.

The new market model promises greater consistency in healthcare delivery, more standardized medical practices, and better resource allocation, ensuring that service members and their families receive high-quality care no matter where they are stationed. The San Diego Market is set to lead this transformation, showcasing the future of military medicine.
