SAN DIEGO, CA — September 2025 — San Diego’s cultural heartbeat will shine brighter this October as the city’s most iconic museums and attractions once again welcome children with free admission. A tradition that has become a seasonal highlight for families across California, the Kids Free San Diego program invites young learners to explore, discover, and be inspired—without cost—at more than 60 participating institutions throughout the county.

From October 1 through October 31, children ages 12 and under will enjoy complimentary admission when accompanied by a paying adult. This initiative, led by the San Diego Museum Council, represents more than just free entry—it reflects San Diego’s commitment to expanding access to cultural, educational, and artistic experiences for the next generation.

A Month of Exploration and Wonder

Participating attractions span across San Diego County, ranging from historic landmarks and world-class museums to specialized centers of science, art, and innovation. Families can embark on oceanic adventures at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, step into the pages of pop culture at the Comic-Con Museum, or connect with history aboard the legendary USS Midway Museum. Other notable destinations include the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, and the California Surf Museum, each offering an enriching, hands-on learning experience.

By weaving together history, art, science, and culture, the program ensures that every family can customize their own itinerary of discovery, making October one of the most family-friendly months in San Diego.

The Importance of Access to Cultural Experiences

For families, especially those navigating the financial challenges of modern life, cultural outings often become rare luxuries. The Kids Free San Diego initiative aims to change that narrative by eliminating barriers and ensuring that all children, regardless of background, can access San Diego’s world-renowned institutions.

The program’s impact extends beyond the immediate joy of a museum visit—it fosters curiosity, creativity, and a sense of connection. Whether standing in awe beneath a giant sea turtle at the Birch Aquarium or marveling at aviation history on the Midway, children are exposed to powerful moments that shape their learning journeys.

How Families Can Participate

To take advantage of the offer, families must claim a Kids Free coupon available online at the San Diego Museum Council’s website. The promotion is valid from October 1 to October 31, 2025, and must be presented at the participating location upon arrival. Each child must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive free entry.

It is important to note that some museums may charge additional fees for special exhibitions, premium programs, or film screenings. Additionally, the program is generally limited to one use per guest, per venue, each month.

The Balboa Park Explorer Pass and Go San Diego Pass do not qualify as paid adult admission for this program, reinforcing the need for families to plan ahead and confirm details directly with their selected destinations.

A Boost for Tourism and Local Communities

Beyond its family-focused benefits, Kids Free San Diego provides a significant boost to local tourism and the economy. By attracting families from across the state—and even nationwide—the program increases foot traffic for local businesses, restaurants, and hospitality providers. It positions San Diego not only as a cultural hub but also as a premier family-friendly travel destination during the fall season.

For local communities, this program underscores the city’s dedication to inclusivity and public engagement. It provides a unique opportunity for residents to rediscover their own backyard while strengthening bonds through shared experiences.

Why October Matters for Families

October’s mild weather makes it an ideal month for exploration, whether families choose a day at the beach or a walk through historic Old Town. Pairing the season with free cultural access amplifies its appeal. For many parents, this program offers a chance to introduce children to institutions they might not otherwise prioritize, cultivating lifelong habits of museum-going and curiosity-driven learning.

The month-long celebration of culture and discovery also aligns with broader educational goals. Schools and teachers can encourage students to participate in family outings that reinforce classroom learning, bridging the gap between academic instruction and real-world experience.

Looking Ahead

As families prepare to claim their offers, organizers encourage early planning. With more than 60 institutions participating, opportunities abound, but certain venues may reach capacity on peak days. Checking museum websites directly ensures a smoother, more enjoyable visit.

The San Diego Museum Council emphasizes that Kids Free San Diego is not just about free admission—it is about investing in the next generation. By opening doors to knowledge, imagination, and cultural appreciation, the city continues its legacy of fostering a thriving, inclusive community.

About the San Diego Museum Council

Through initiatives like Kids Free San Diego, the Council underscores its mission of enriching lives and inspiring the next generation through accessible, inclusive experiences.
