New Editorial Initiative Spotlights Native San Diego Stories with Style, Substance, and Cultural Gravity
Amplifying entrepreneurs, educators, nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, and community builders shaping the region’s future.

A San Diego Built by People Who Don’t Wait for Permission to Lead
In a city often defined by its coastline, its innovation economy, and its endless reinvention, there’s another San Diego, one that lives in the neighborhoods, the classrooms, the community rooms, the small businesses, the back offices of nonprofit work, the late-night planning sessions, the early-morning deliveries, the grant proposals, the mentorship calls, the faith, the friction, and the follow-through. It is San Diego built by people who don’t wait for permission to lead.
“The San Diego Standouts” Brings Essential Local Stories to the Editorial Stage
Today, San Diego Weekly announces a new collaboration series with Young Black and N’ Business (YB&N’B) designed to bring those native San Diego stories to life, stories that are too important to stay local whispers, too impactful to remain under-credited, too vivid to be reduced to a headline. “The San Diego Standouts” is a signature editorial initiative built to celebrate the people and organizations creating measurable impact, often quietly, always powerfully, across the region.
Launching February 2026 with Recurring Digital Features Published Year-Round
Launching in February 2026 with recurring digital features, the series will publish new stories year-round, curated by YB&N’B and produced in collaboration with San Diego Weekly’s editorial team.
Rooted in narrative-forward storytelling, equal parts culture, character, and consequence—the series expands San Diego Weekly’s commitment to the stories shaping the city from the inside out.
Who the Series Will Spotlight
Through the collaboration, YB&N’B will curate and contribute stories for San Diego Weekly spotlighting entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, educators, philanthropists, and community leaders whose work is actively redefining what success and service looks like in San Diego. The series will prioritize native and deeply rooted narratives: the kind that carry lineage, place, and the unmistakable texture of lived experience.
“San Diego has always been a city of makers, builders of businesses, communities, movements, and culture,” said a spokesperson for San Diego Weekly. “This initiative is about giving those stories the editorial stage they deserve, with depth and intention.”
Roosevelt Williams III to Lead Story Development and Spotlight Curation
Guiding the initiative is Roosevelt Williams III, Founder and CEO of YB&N’B, who will drive this new series forward, leading story development, community sourcing, and spotlight curation while collaborating with San Diego Weekly’s editorial team. Williams’ vision for YB&N’B has consistently centered visibility with purpose: elevating excellence, expanding opportunity, and ensuring impact is documented with the same care as it is created. Williams brings to the collaboration a distinct clarity: visibility should be purposeful and storytelling should build community.
“This is about being seen accurately,” said Williams. “San Diego is full of entrepreneurs and leaders doing world-class work, often with limited resources and infinite responsibility. These spotlights are our way of saying: your work counts, your story matters, and this city is better because you’re in it.”
What Readers Can Expect Throughout the Year
The series will roll out with ongoing editorial moments throughout the year, including founder profiles, impact features, education and leadership stories, philanthropy and community-investment spotlights, and neighborhood narratives, each crafted to illuminate not only accomplishment, but the why behind it. Each feature will focus on the person behind the impact: the origin story, the turning point, the obstacles, the choices, the stakes, the cost, the community, the future.
A Shared Commitment to Documenting Impact and Mobilizing Support
San Diego Weekly is committed to significance, documenting impact with the same care with which it’s created. For YB&N’B, the series extends a longstanding mission, ensuring excellence and community impact are not siloed into seasonal acknowledgments, but woven into the mainstream narrative of what makes San Diego thrive.
A Conduit for Community Discovery, Connection, and Investment
The series will also serve as a conduit for community discovery, helping readers find the businesses to support, the organizations to partner with, the leaders to follow, and the initiatives worth investing in. In this way, the series is built not only to inform, but to mobilize: to connect people to the work and the workers behind the city’s momentum.
