San Diego Weekly Standouts | March 2026 Honoree

There are moments when industries evolve. And then there are moments when someone decides not to wait for that evolution, and builds the future themselves.

Diane Strand didn’t set out to create a festival.

She set out to solve a problem. But what she built in the process became something far more powerful:
a living, breathing ecosystem where creativity is not only celebrated, but activated.

SAN DIEGO, Calif.

The Absence That Sparked a Movement

Before DigiFest® Temecula, there was silence. A once-thriving creative event, the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival, had disappeared, leaving behind more than just an empty calendar.

It left a gap.

A gap for creators.
For storytellers.
For those searching for a place to belong within an industry that often feels distant, fragmented, and difficult to access.

The city approached Diane Strand with a question:
Would she help rebuild something for the creative community?

Her answer wasn’t to recreate what had been lost.

It was to reimagine what was possible.

Drawing from her background in television, working on productions such as Friends, General Hospital, and reality TV, alongside more than two decades as an entrepreneur in video production and multimedia, Diane recognized something others were only beginning to understand:

The future of storytelling was no longer confined to traditional film.

It was digital.
It was decentralized.
It was already happening everywhere.

And it needed a platform.

Not a Festival, it’s A Framework for the Future

DigiFest® Temecula was born from that realization.

Not as a film festival.

But as a digital media celebration and competition designed to reflect the full spectrum of modern storytelling.

From the beginning, it embraced a breadth rarely seen in traditional festivals:

Film. Animation. Music. Podcasting. Graphic design. Photography. Scriptwriting. Acting. Game design. Websites. Audiobooks. Digital novels and beyond.

Because Diane understood something fundamental:

Creativity does not exist in silos.

It moves.

It evolves.

And when given the right environment, it multiplies.

“Start Before You’re Ready”

The philosophy behind DigiFest® is not polished.

It’s not theoretical. It’s lived.

“Start before you’re ready.”

Diane had never produced a multi-day festival.

There was no perfect timing. No perfect plan. No guarantee of success.

But waiting would have meant nothing would happen at all. So she moved forward anyway. What began as uncertainty became momentum.

Year one led to year two. And eventually…

To a decade of impact.

The Hidden Reality of Creative Careers

For many creators, the challenge isn’t talent.

It’s navigation.

The creative industry offers no clear roadmap. Success is rarely linear, often delayed, and difficult to measure. A filmmaker may spend years developing a project before it reaches an audience. A musician or podcaster may produce exceptional work yet struggle to gain visibility.

Writers, designers, and digital storytellers frequently operate in isolation, without access to collaborative teams, professional feedback, or meaningful exposure.

And in today’s digital landscape, the challenge has only intensified.

Technology has made creation more accessible than ever, but it has also created an increasingly crowded marketplace.

Standing out now requires more than creativity.

It requires:

  • Strategy
  • Relationships
  • Industry insight
  • Access to the right rooms

Without these, even the most talented voices can remain unseen.

Building the Bridge Between Talent and Opportunity

DigiFest® was designed to close that gap.

Not by offering abstract inspiration, but by creating real, tangible pathways.

Through:

  • Panels led by industry professionals
  • Interactive workshops and presentations
  • Festival screenings and competitions
  • Direct access to working creatives across industries
  • Networking environments that foster collaboration

Participants gain insight into how projects are:

  • Developed
  • Produced
  • Funded
  • Distributed
  • Marketed

It demystifies an industry that often feels inaccessible.

And perhaps most importantly…

It places creators in the room where opportunity actually happens.

As Diane explains:

“Creative people don’t just need talent, they need opportunity, guidance, and a place where their work can be seen. DigiFest® was created to bring creators into the room where collaboration happens, where industry professionals share what they’ve learned, and where the next generation of storytellers can discover what’s possible.”

A Nonprofit Model That Changes Everything

Unlike most festivals, DigiFest® was never built as a revenue engine.

It was built as a reinvestment engine.

Operated under the nonprofit JDS Creative Academy, every dollar generated is redirected back into the community, supporting scholarships, seasonal programs, camps, and access for creators who might otherwise be excluded.

This model allows DigiFest® to do something rare:

Prioritize people over profit.

And in doing so, it creates a space that is:

  • Accessible
  • Inclusive
  • Collaborative
  • Purpose-driven

Not transactional.

Where Collaboration Replaces Isolation

One of the most profound shifts DigiFest® creates is cultural.

It replaces isolation with connection.

Creators who once worked independently now find themselves surrounded by:

  • Peers who share their vision
  • Mentors who guide their growth
  • Industry leaders who validate their work

Ideas are no longer confined to individuals.

They expand through collaboration.

And in that expansion, new opportunities are born.

From Possibility to Proof

The true measure of DigiFest® is not attendance.

It is transformation.

Consider the story of Teresa Dean.

A student immersed in the JDS Creative Academy, Teresa explored acting, scriptwriting, and filmmaking while actively participating in DigiFest®.

She submitted her work.

She showed up.

She engaged.

And during the festival, she connected with a director.

What followed was not chance.

It was alignment.

With the confidence and skills she developed, Teresa later pitched her DigiFest®-winning script directly to that same director.

Today, that project is circulating in conversations connected to major studios, including Pixar and DreamWorks Animation.

That is the power of proximity.

That is the power of access.

That is the power of DigiFest®.

The Values That Sustain the Vision

At its core, DigiFest® is guided by a framework of principles that shape every experience it creates:

  • Innovation — Embracing emerging technologies and new forms of storytelling
  • Inclusion — Ensuring access for diverse voices, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Education — Providing real-world learning through mentorship and hands-on experience
  • Collaboration — Building bridges between students, professionals, and entrepreneurs
  • Empowerment — Helping individuals discover their voice and step into leadership
  • Excellence — Recognizing high-quality work across all digital mediums
  • Workforce Development — Connecting creativity to sustainable careers
  • Community Impact — Strengthening local economies through creative ecosystems

These are not abstract ideals.

They are operational.

They are visible in every workshop, every conversation, every opportunity created.

Creativity as Economic Infrastructure

DigiFest® does more than inspire creators.

It develops a workforce.

By connecting participants to industry professionals and real-world pathways, it helps transform creative skills into viable careers, bridging the gap between passion and profession.

At the same time, it contributes to regional economic growth, tourism, and cultural vitality, demonstrating that creativity is not just artistic expression.

It is economic infrastructure.

A Festival That Became a National Blueprint

Now entering its 10th year, DigiFest® is expanding beyond Temecula.

Through initiatives like Arts Across America, the model is being shared, licensed, and replicated, supporting new creative leaders who want to bring similar ecosystems to their own communities.

A new collaboration with BizCon San Diego marks another step in that evolution.

What began as a local solution is becoming a national framework.

A blueprint for how communities can harness creativity as a driver of innovation, opportunity, and connection.

The Experience That Keeps People Coming Back

DigiFest® is not just a place to showcase work.

It is a place to experience the full lifecycle of creativity.

Attendees don’t simply observe.

They engage.

They learn from Emmy Award winners, voice actors, creative entrepreneurs, and industry leaders.

They witness performances, participate in workshops, and immerse themselves in conversations that shape the future of media.

And in that environment…

Something shifts.

Voices That Reflect the Impact

“JDS Creative Academy and DigiFest® helped me launch my journey into the creative space. The support and encouragement I have received have been pivotal to my success. I started with acting classes, moved on to screenwriting, and eventually film production. DigiFest inspired me to take all that I learned and move forward with confidence. I’ve met amazing speakers, connected with other creatives, learned valuable skills, and felt like part of a family. DigiFest has given me opportunities that will carry me forward in my creative journey.”
— Teresa Deen

“Winning an award was amazing, but the best part was learning from other industry professionals. DigiFest creates a space where creators can grow and connect.”
— Kerron Andrews

“A small local festival that packs a big punch. The workshops were amazing, and I learned so much!”
— Teresa Deen

“Being honored with three Digi Awards meant more than recognition… it reminded me that my voice and artistry matter. DigiFest has been a powerful source of encouragement and community, helping me move forward with clarity and confidence in my creative journey.”
— Joanna Pearl

Why Her Story Matters Now

In a world where technology is accelerating faster than ever…

Where content is abundant but connection is scarce…

Where creators are searching not just for platforms, but for pathways…

Diane Strand built something that answers all of it.

She didn’t wait for permission. She didn’t wait to be ready.

She created a space where others could begin. And in doing so, she transformed more than an industry.

She transformed access. Opportunity. And the belief that creativity, when supported, when connected, when given room to grow, can change the trajectory of a life.

Because Some Movements Don’t Start Loud

They start quietly. With a decision. With a risk. With someone willing to begin before everything is figured out. And ten years later…

They become something others can step into.

Some contributors analyze issues. Bogdan “Bogey” Matuszynski has spent years working through them worldwide. Bogdan was born and raised in America's Finest City, San Diego, as a first generation Polish Mexican American, Bogdan grew up shaped by stories of his family rebuilding from the ground up. His family history led him to learn languages, study different cultures, and develop a fascination with geopolitics and how to become a more engaged member of the community. That curiosity evolved into a career centered on diplomacy, conflict transformation, and community social impact and resilience. Bogdan earned his undergraduate degree in International Security and Conflict Resolution, along with minors in Islamic and Arabic Studies and Latin American Studies from San Diego State University before receiving a Fulbright Grant from the U.S. Department of State to teach and develop community initiatives in Spain. He was later selected and awarded a Rotary Peace Fellowship and learned and conducted field studies in Asia. His travels to over 60 countries, including places where most people shy away, have brought him face to face with the realities of conflict and post conflict recovery. From the chaos of war zones and post conflict environments to the heart of diverse cultures, he has listened to personal stories of hardship, healing, and hope. Those experiences deepened his understanding of resiliency, peacebuilding, and the art of restoring trust in fractured communities. Bogdan is the Founder of iSERVE, International Service Education Research Vision Empowerment, www.iserveinternational.com. Through iSERVE, he supports students and professionals pursuing scholarships, fellowships, university admissions, grants, and international opportunities. He teaches diplomacy skills, international project development, and the craft of designing competitive applications rooted in preparation and authenticity. He has organized educational initiatives in the United States, Mexico, Egypt, Syria, Spain, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and online for participants around the world. Bogdan has supported cross sector violence prevention conversations and projects, contributed to disaster and housing relief during the 2024 San Diego flood response, and in 2025 was appointed to the City of Chula Vista Homelessness and Housing Commission . He serves as Peace Chair of the San Diego Coastal Rotary Club and contributes to regional mental health initiatives. He is also an Ambassador for the Institute of Economics and Peace. An internationally recognized award recipient, including The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow distinction for merit, Bogdan remains committed to service to others. Having once navigated complex systems without clear guidance himself, he is passionate about helping others access opportunities they may not see as possible. He is a connector and educator who bridges stakeholders across sectors to advance peacebuilding, community safety, and conflict transformation. He brings together volunteers, educators, civic leaders, business professionals, and international partners to design solutions that make communities safer and more resilient. Bogdan lives by the philosophy of “Conquering with Kindness,” helping others unlock their potential and purpose through service.
