TIJUANA, Baja California, Mexico — Some cities change slowly. Tijuana moves with rhythm, urgency, flavor, creativity, and a confidence that feels impossible to ignore once you are here.

This is a city shaped by adaptation. By international influence. By people who understand how to create opportunity, build community, and make things work even when the path is not always easy. That energy is part of what makes Tijuana so compelling. It is not trying to become someone else’s version of a great city. It is becoming more fully itself.

TIJUANA, Baja California, Mexico — Algunas ciudades cambian poco a poco.

Tijuana is in the middle of a renaissance, and for anyone who has not experienced the city recently, the change is worth seeing with fresh eyes.

This renaissance is not just about new restaurants, high-rise buildings, or a growing skyline. It is cultural, culinary, creative, architectural, entrepreneurial, industrial, and deeply communal. It can be seen in the city’s food and beverage scene, felt through its arts and entertainment, recognized in its medical tourism and wellness industries, and understood through the manufacturing, biotechnology, residential, shopping, sports, and business communities helping shape its future.

Tijuana is reintroducing itself.

For some, Tijuana is a familiar place tied to family memories, quick visits, favorite restaurants, shopping, music, sports, entertainment, or medical care. For others, it is a city they have heard about but never fully explored. And for many who have not visited in years, Tijuana may still live in their mind through an older version of the city.

But cities evolve. Tijuana has evolved.

That is why this upcoming San Diego Weekly San Diego Standouts Cali-Baja series matters.

Cali-Baja refers to the dynamic regional identity connecting Southern California and Baja California, Mexico, especially the San Diego, Tijuana, Imperial County, and broader Baja California region. More technically, it is a shared regional ecosystem shaped by culture, tourism, education, healthcare, medical tourism, manufacturing, biotechnology, logistics, entrepreneurship, food, arts, sports, entertainment, and innovation. More than a phrase, Cali-Baja reflects how communities, businesses, families, students, creatives, visitors, and industries are connected through one of North America’s most unique regional corridors.

We are honored to launch a new series exploring the heartbeat of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, a city that offers something for everyone. Whether you are a local, a first-time visitor, a returning traveler, someone visiting from across the world, or someone coming for a day trip, culinary experience, cultural outing, sporting event, shopping trip, wellness service, or medical tourism, Tijuana welcomes people with an energy and personality entirely its own.

Thanks to our collaboration with Cotuco Tijuana, and with deep appreciation to Karim Chalita, Enrique Rangel Rodriguez, and their team, San Diego Standouts had the opportunity to experience a deeper look at the energy, vision, and momentum shaping the city. Their support helped curate a meaningful experience that allowed us to see Tijuana through its people, places, partnerships, and possibilities.

What stood out most was the movement.

Tijuana is not standing still. It is building, creating, adapting, and redefining itself in real time.

The city’s renaissance is visible across many layers of daily life. It is in the culinary spaces gaining international attention. It is in the craft beverage scene. It is in the luchador ring, the stadiums, the cultural centers, the galleries, the music, the public spaces, and the neighborhoods. It is in historic shopping areas and newer malls. It is in growing residential communities where people are choosing to rent, buy, invest, and build a future. It is in medical offices, wellness spaces, innovation hubs, manufacturing facilities, and creative corridors where Tijuana continues to prove that it is more than a destination. It is a serious cultural and economic force.

This is not a city meant to be understood through one visit, one headline, or one old assumption.

From Michelin-recognized dining, to stepping into the luchador ring, to going behind the scenes at a sister-owned craft brewery, this series will explore the people and places that make up the heartbeat of a resilient and creative city. Tijuana is a fusion of cultures, flavors, ideas, industries, and ways of living. It is raw, refined, historic, modern, local, global, and constantly transforming.

There is nothing else like it.

Our visit to Centro Cultural Tijuana, CECUT, and the IMAX experience offered a powerful window into the city’s past through history, arts, and culture. At the same time, it placed us in the middle of a city clearly looking toward the future. With cranes across the horizon and dynamic new high-rise buildings beginning to reshape the sky, Tijuana’s renaissance is not just an idea. It is visible. It is physical. It is cultural. It is happening in the streets, kitchens, businesses, clinics, studios, breweries, malls, homes, gathering spaces, and community corridors that give the city its pulse.

This is the spirit of Cali-Baja.

Cali-Baja is defined by connection, creativity, entrepreneurship, hospitality, culture, and shared opportunity. From Southern California to Baja California, this region continues to grow through the people who choose to collaborate, create, visit, invest, celebrate, and build meaningful relationships.

Innovation here moves through restaurants, studios, universities, wellness spaces, small businesses, cultural institutions, creative communities, medical offices, breweries, galleries, nonprofit organizations, manufacturing facilities, and local neighborhoods. It lives in the people who are shaping a region that feels both deeply local and increasingly global.

This experience was also meaningful because it brought together voices committed to telling the story of the region from multiple perspectives. Our team and I, Bogdan Matuszynski, were grateful to share the journey alongside Roosevelt Williams III, Sacha Connesson, and others who care deeply about highlighting the people, places, and partnerships that make Cali-Baja so unique. We were also joined by media voices including KPBS arts and culture reporter Julia Dixon Evans and her team from “The Finest,” as well as representation from Univision, each witnessing Tijuana’s momentum through their own lens.

Special thanks as well to Daniel Flores, Gente Bonita Magazine, and GenteConnect for their collaboration and continued support in helping strengthen regional storytelling, cultural exchange, and community-centered opportunities.

At its core, this series is about more than travel, dining, arts, entertainment, or tourism. It is about seeing a city with fresh eyes. It is about honoring the people behind the experiences. It is about recognizing Tijuana as a place of creativity, hospitality, resilience, flavor, culture, innovation, and possibility.

For locals, it is a reminder to keep rediscovering what is nearby.

For visitors, it is an invitation to experience a city with depth, warmth, and personality.

For those who have not been in a while, it is a reason to take another look.

And for those who have only heard about Tijuana from a distance, it is an opportunity to see a more complete story.

Tijuana is not just a destination. It is an experience. It is a community. It is a city with a heartbeat that deserves to be seen, heard, tasted, felt, and understood.

Some contributors analyze issues. Bogdan “Bogey” Matuszynski has spent years working through them worldwide. Bogdan was born and raised in America's Finest City, San Diego, as a first generation Polish Mexican American, Bogdan grew up shaped by stories of his family rebuilding from the ground up. His family history led him to learn languages, study different cultures, and develop a fascination with geopolitics and how to become a more engaged member of the community. That curiosity evolved into a career centered on diplomacy, conflict transformation, and community social impact and resilience. Bogdan earned his undergraduate degree in International Security and Conflict Resolution, along with minors in Islamic and Arabic Studies and Latin American Studies from San Diego State University before receiving a Fulbright Grant from the U.S. Department of State to teach and develop community initiatives in Spain. He was later selected and awarded a Rotary Peace Fellowship and learned and conducted field studies in Asia. His travels to over 60 countries, including places where most people shy away, have brought him face to face with the realities of conflict and post conflict recovery. From the chaos of war zones and post conflict environments to the heart of diverse cultures, he has listened to personal stories of hardship, healing, and hope. Those experiences deepened his understanding of resiliency, peacebuilding, and the art of restoring trust in fractured communities. Bogdan is the Founder of iSERVE, International Service Education Research Vision Empowerment, www.iserveinternational.com. Through iSERVE, he supports students and professionals pursuing scholarships, fellowships, university admissions, grants, and international opportunities. He teaches diplomacy skills, international project development, and the craft of designing competitive applications rooted in preparation and authenticity. He has organized educational initiatives in the United States, Mexico, Egypt, Syria, Spain, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and online for participants around the world. Bogdan has supported cross sector violence prevention conversations and projects, contributed to disaster and housing relief during the 2024 San Diego flood response, and in 2025 was appointed to the City of Chula Vista Homelessness and Housing Commission . He serves as Peace Chair of the San Diego Coastal Rotary Club and contributes to regional mental health initiatives. He is also an Ambassador for the Institute of Economics and Peace. An internationally recognized award recipient, including The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow distinction for merit, Bogdan remains committed to service to others. Having once navigated complex systems without clear guidance himself, he is passionate about helping others access opportunities they may not see as possible. He is a connector and educator who bridges stakeholders across sectors to advance peacebuilding, community safety, and conflict transformation. He brings together volunteers, educators, civic leaders, business professionals, and international partners to design solutions that make communities safer and more resilient. Bogdan lives by the philosophy of “Conquering with Kindness,” helping others unlock their potential and purpose through service.
