The University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) solidifies its status as a global leader in research and innovation, ranking 9th globally on the prestigious 2024 Highly Cited Researchers list by Clarivate. This recognition, shared with Germany’s esteemed Max Planck Society, cements UC San Diego’s influence across disciplines, reaffirming its prominence as the highest-ranking public research institution in the United States.

With an impressive 56 researchers recognized, the university’s standing underscores its commitment to advancing multidisciplinary discoveries that tackle humanity’s most critical challenges. The acknowledgment spans diverse fields, from neuroscience and bioengineering to economics and environmental science, reflecting the university’s unmatched breadth of impact.

Advancing Global Knowledge
UC San Diego’s Chancellor, Pradeep K. Khosla, expressed pride in the university’s enduring legacy of excellence:
“We are thrilled but not surprised to see UC San Diego ranked among the top institutions for Highly Cited Researchers. This recognition affirms our faculty’s exceptional contributions to advancing knowledge and addressing global challenges in healthcare, sustainability, and technology.”

This year’s Highly Cited Researchers list comprises 6,636 scholars worldwide, with UC San Diego’s honorees representing fields as varied as molecular biology, microbiology, and immunology. Four researchers received recognition in multiple categories, showcasing their extraordinary influence.

Among the University of California system’s 10 campuses, UC San Diego leads, standing as the only UC institution in the global top 10. Notably, UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley tied for 12th place, while UCLA ranked 23rd, reinforcing the system’s collective academic prowess.

A Catalyst for Innovation
UC San Diego’s accolades are not confined to academic impact; they extend into real-world applications. Researchers like Joseph Wang exemplify this dual achievement. Wang, a prolific inventor, has collaborated on groundbreaking technologies, including:

  • Wearable Ultrasound Devices: These innovative tools provide wireless, non-invasive muscle activity monitoring, paving the way for advancements in healthcare and human-machine interfaces.
  • Sweat-Powered Electronics: Finger wraps capable of monitoring vital chemicals such as glucose and vitamins.
  • Microscopic Robots: Designed to navigate lungs and deliver cancer-fighting medication directly to tumors.

Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Corinne Peek-Asa praised the university’s ecosystem:
“UC San Diego’s highly cited researchers exemplify our culture of innovation, seamlessly transitioning discoveries into transformative solutions that benefit society at large.”

Trailblazers in Research
Renowned researchers like Rob Knight and Pieter Dorrestein amplify the university’s influence. Knight, a global leader in microbiome research, received recognition in three categories this year—an achievement attained by fewer than 1% of all researchers on the list. His pioneering work continues to shape healthcare, biotechnology, and environmental science, while his trainees now join him among the highly cited elite.

Dorrestein’s groundbreaking studies in decoding microbiome “languages” promise transformative healthcare solutions, including targeted treatments for infections, metabolic disorders, and memory-related conditions.

Other honorees include Bjoern Peters and Daniela Weiskopf, celebrated for their multidisciplinary achievements in immunology and molecular biology. Their recognition highlights the collaborative excellence driving UC San Diego’s success.

Global Impact and Prestige
The Highly Cited Researchers list plays a pivotal role in evaluating institutional research standings, such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). This year, UC San Diego ranked 3rd among U.S. public universities in ARWU, underscoring its robust global influence.

By ranking in the top 1% of citations, UC San Diego researchers affirm their contributions to global knowledge. This recognition not only enhances the university’s reputation but also fosters groundbreaking solutions that address critical challenges facing society.

As UC San Diego continues to break boundaries, it inspires researchers, students, and entrepreneurs worldwide. Explore the groundbreaking work driving global innovation and shaping the future of science and technology.
