The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) has once again reaffirmed its standing as a premier global academic institution. In the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the university ascended to the No. 3 position among U.S. public universities, and also improved to No. 14 among all U.S. institutions and No. 18 globally.
Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla praised the university’s upward trajectory, stating, “UC San Diego’s rise in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities reflects our unwavering dedication to pioneering research, transformative innovation, and delivering world-class education. This recognition of our alumni and faculty underscores our mission to create a lasting societal impact. By equipping future leaders with the tools to drive change, we continue to address the pressing challenges of today and tomorrow.”
Annually, the ARWU assesses more than 2,500 universities worldwide to compile a ranking of the top 1,000 institutions. The rankings are determined by six key indicators: Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to alumni and faculty; the number of highly cited researchers; articles published in prestigious journals such as Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita academic performance.
UC San Diego continues to lead groundbreaking research across multiple disciplines, pushing the boundaries of knowledge in areas such as health, behavioral science, and politics. In July 2024, the university announced $1.73 billion in new research funding, further supporting its commitment to advancing research excellence and innovation.
The university’s community of emerging scientists is also addressing significant global challenges. Early-career researchers at UC San Diego are investigating topics ranging from disease-critical genes to artificial intelligence in decision-making. This year, eight UC San Diego researchers received National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER awards, recognizing their exceptional potential to drive breakthroughs in fields like structural engineering and environmental microbiology. These prestigious awards are given to early-career faculty who demonstrate remarkable promise in both research and education, positioning them as future leaders in their respective disciplines.
UC San Diego experts are also leading critical studies on the effects of extreme heat on communities of color, low-income neighborhoods, and medically vulnerable populations. These researchers are mapping the health impacts of rising temperatures and working on strategies to help at-risk groups adapt. Environmental scientist Jennifer Burney of the School of Global Policy and Strategy is examining why racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. experience greater exposure to urban heat, while economics professor Joshua Graff Zivin is investigating the impact of extreme heat on labor in industries where workers are exposed to outdoor conditions.
In addition to its ARWU rankings, UC San Diego has garnered recognition from other prestigious outlets, recently being named the No. 3 public university in the U.S. by Forbes in its 2025 ranking of America’s Top Colleges.
