UC San Diego Health has once again solidified its reputation as a leader in maternity and infant care, earning the prestigious title of a High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the third consecutive year that the region’s only academic medical center has been celebrated for its unwavering commitment to providing world-class obstetric and neonatal care.
From advanced fertility treatments to the delicate care of premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), UC San Diego Health exemplifies excellence. This recognition underscores the institution’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of parents and newborns during one of life’s most transformative moments.
A Legacy of Exceptional Care
Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, emphasized the organization’s mission: “UC San Diego Health consistently sets the standard for highly reliable maternity care. We are honored to support families in welcoming new life, whether they are first-time parents or expanding their families.”
The U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Maternity Care survey, launched in 2021, evaluates hospitals nationwide based on objective quality measures. Out of 817 institutions assessed, only 414 achieved the coveted High Performing designation.
Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine, described the honor as a reflection of the team’s dedication. “Receiving this recognition for the third time is a testament to our commitment to compassionate, high-quality care during one of the most extraordinary moments in life,” she said.
Excellence in Numbers and Impact
UC San Diego Health’s maternity care extends beyond delivering approximately 5,000 babies annually. Its achievements include an impressive breastfeeding rate of nearly 90%—far exceeding the national average of 49%.
Dr. Eustratia Hubbard, medical director of newborn services, highlighted the importance of this milestone. “Breastfeeding significantly enhances immunity, brain development, and protection against various conditions, and we are proud to lead in this area nationally,” she stated.
Innovative and Inclusive Care
UC San Diego Health is also a pioneer in promoting equity and inclusivity. Under the leadership of Audra Meadows, MD, and the Culture and Justice Quorum, the institution has prioritized bias training, trauma-informed care, and gender inclusivity. These initiatives aim to ensure that every patient receives equitable and respectful care.
The hospital system has expanded its outreach to underserved communities, integrating doula support and implementing equity-focused perinatal quality improvements. By prioritizing data-driven approaches, UC San Diego Health continues to elevate its patient outcomes.
Birthing-Friendly Recognition
As part of its ranking, UC San Diego Health was also recognized as a Birthing-Friendly Hospital—a distinction earned through participation in quality improvement collaboratives and implementing patient safety practices.
Maryam Tarsa, MD, perinatologist at UC San Diego Health, emphasized the team’s expertise: “Our highly trained providers and nurses specialize in caring for high-risk pregnancies, ensuring a safe journey for mothers and babies alike. This recognition highlights our ongoing commitment to excellence.”
Tailored Care for Every Journey
With two birthing locations and a comprehensive range of services, UC San Diego Health offers unparalleled options for expectant parents. The Birth Center at Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla provides a holistic birthing experience, while traditional labor and delivery settings are available at both Jacobs and Hillcrest Medical Centers. Additionally, free doula support is offered, further enhancing the patient experience.
The institution’s NICU capabilities are equally impressive, with Level III services at Jacobs Medical Center and Level II care at Hillcrest Medical Center, ensuring specialized support for newborns with unique needs.
Leading the Way
This latest recognition not only reaffirms UC San Diego Health’s position as a leader in maternity care but also inspires confidence among families seeking the best for their growing families. Dr. Gyamfi-Bannerman encapsulated the sentiment: “Our team’s mission is to provide patient-centered care every day. It’s a privilege to contribute to a healthy, positive experience for parents and their newborns.”
For families in search of exceptional maternity care, UC San Diego Health remains a trusted partner, delivering excellence at every stage of the journey from conception to postpartum care.
