In a defining moment for global cinema, Academy Award–winning actress Zoe Saldaña has officially become the highest-grossing actor of all time, a historic milestone achieved following the worldwide success of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The achievement not only cements Saldaña’s place in film history but also underscores her enduring influence across the most powerful franchises ever created.

With this latest installment of James Cameron’s groundbreaking Avatar saga surpassing $1.23 billion at the global box office, Saldaña’s cumulative worldwide box office total has now reached an extraordinary $15.47 billion, according to industry data tracked by The Numbers. As a result, she has surpassed fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe icons Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson to claim the top position—a feat that redefines the parameters of longevity, versatility, and star power in Hollywood.

Notably, Saldaña holds an unprecedented distinction: she has appeared in three of the four highest-grossing films of all time, including Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Moreover, she is the first actress in cinematic history to star in four films that each generated more than $2 billion globally, a list that also includes Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Few performers have achieved such sustained commercial success across multiple universes, genres, and decades.

Beyond Avatar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe—where she brought emotional depth and complexity to the role of Gamora across three Guardians of the Galaxy films—Saldaña also anchored the rebooted Star Trek trilogy as Nyota Uhura. That franchise alone generated more than $1 billion worldwide, further reinforcing her reputation as a cornerstone of blockbuster storytelling.

Following the announcement, Saldaña shared a heartfelt message with fans and collaborators via social media, reflecting on the magnitude of the moment and the collective effort behind it. She expressed deep gratitude to the filmmakers who entrusted her with defining roles, including J.J. Abrams, Joe and Anthony Russo, James Gunn, and, most significantly, Avatar visionary James Cameron.

According to Saldaña, Cameron’s pioneering approach to performance capture technology has been instrumental not only in building the immersive world of Pandora, but also in elevating the craft of acting itself. By prioritizing emotional authenticity over traditional constraints, the technology allows performers to channel their full energy into connection, nuance, and presence—an approach that has resonated with audiences worldwide and contributed to the franchise’s enduring success.

Equally important, Saldaña dedicated her milestone to the global fan base that has supported her work across generations. She emphasized that box office records are not achieved in isolation but are built through trust, loyalty, and emotional investment from audiences who continue to show up with enthusiasm and openness. Her closing message carried a powerful note of optimism: a hope that the next record-breaking achievement will belong to another woman.

This historic box office accomplishment follows what has already been a landmark year for Saldaña. In early 2025, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her transformative performance in Emilia Pérez, becoming the first Dominican American to receive an Oscar. The film, directed by acclaimed auteur Jacques Audiard, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to dominate awards season, earning Saldaña honors from the SAG Awards, BAFTA, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards.

While the prestige of the Oscar has added a new chapter to her legacy, Saldaña has made it clear that the recognition is not a conclusion but a catalyst. Her focus remains firmly on continued growth, artistic challenge, and storytelling that resonates on a global scale.

In Avatar: Fire and Ash, Saldaña reprises her role as Neytiri, the fierce Na’vi warrior whose emotional arc remains central to the franchise’s evolving narrative. Her portrayal continues to balance physical intensity with profound emotional intelligence, a combination that has become a hallmark of her career.

Looking ahead, Saldaña is expected to return for Avatar 4, slated for release in December 2029, and Avatar 5, currently planned for December 2031. As the Avatar universe expands, so too does Saldaña’s already unmatched box office legacy—one that reflects not only financial success, but also artistic credibility, cultural impact, and trailblazing representation.

In an industry increasingly driven by data, franchises, and global reach, Zoe Saldaña’s ascent to the top of the box office is more than a statistic. It is a case study in strategic career-building, creative risk-taking, and the enduring power of storytelling performed at the highest level.
