San Diego Weekly Standouts | March 2026 Honoree

As an Afrofuturist, futurist, and cultural strategist, Dr. LaWana Richmond is reimagining how individuals, organizations, and communities engage with the future, transforming imagination into a tool for innovation, connection, and collective possibility.

San Diego, Calif.

A Vision Rooted in Imagination, Long Before It Became a Method

Some people study the future. Others build it.

For Dr. LaWana Richmond, the work she leads today did not begin as a formal discipline or structured career path. It began as a way of seeing the world, shaped by storytelling, lived experience, and a deep understanding that imagination is not separate from reality, it is what shapes it.

Influenced by visionary thinkers and creators such as Octavia Butler, as well as broader speculative traditions and lived community experiences, she developed an early awareness that stories do more than entertain. They expand possibility. They challenge assumptions. They create space for new ways of thinking.

Over time, she began to notice a pattern that would define her work.

The challenge was not a lack of intelligence or capability.

It was a lack of permission to imagine differently.

Many people had never been given the space to envision a future beyond what they had inherited or been conditioned to accept.

And without imagination, there is no innovation.

Without vision, there is no movement.

That realization became the foundation of everything she would go on to build.

Where Futurism Meets Cultural Strategy and Experience Design

Dr. Richmond’s work sits at a unique intersection, one that blends futurism, cultural strategy, and experience design into something that is both visionary and deeply practical.

She is not simply sharing ideas about the future.

She is designing environments where people can experience it.

Through her work with the Black Speculative Arts Movement and her leadership through Grioneers, Inc., she creates immersive spaces where participants engage in storytelling, Dream Tanks, facilitated dialogue, and interactive workshops that allow them to actively co-create new possibilities.

These are not passive experiences.

They are participatory.

They are reflective.

They are catalytic.

Participants are invited to think differently, engage with one another across perspectives, and move from abstract ideas into tangible concepts that can be carried forward into real-world applications.

At its core, her work transforms imagination into a shared, actionable process.

“The future is not something we wait for. It is something we design together.”

The Deeper Problem: A Crisis of Imagination and Connection

Across the communities, institutions, and organizations she works with, Dr. Richmond has identified a consistent set of challenges that often go unspoken but are widely felt.

People struggle to imagine a better future.

Organizations lack the ability to innovate in ways that feel meaningful or sustainable.

Communities experience disconnection, fragmentation, and a loss of shared vision.

Young people, in particular, often lack both a sense of agency and a clear pathway toward shaping their own futures.

And within many spaces, Black imagination remains under-supported, despite its profound potential to drive creativity, innovation, and cultural transformation.

These challenges are not just conceptual.

They shape how people engage, how they contribute, and whether they believe their ideas have value.

Why Traditional Solutions Have Failed to Create Real Change

Many organizations have attempted to address these challenges through familiar and well-intentioned approaches.

Diversity workshops.

Compliance-based trainings.

Equity seminars.

Strategic retreats.

Innovation committees.

Motivational speakers.

Academic lectures.

Career readiness programs.

Leadership initiatives.

While these efforts may provide structure or awareness, they often fail to create lasting transformation.

Because they are frequently:

Passive instead of participatory
Top-down instead of collaborative
Compliance-driven instead of imaginative
Overly academic instead of experiential
Focused on problems instead of possibilities

As a result, they inform people.

But they do not move them.

And they do not fundamentally shift how people think, connect, or create.

A New Model: Practicing the Future Together

Dr. Richmond’s work introduces a fundamentally different approach.

She describes it as a culturally grounded futures lab, an environment where individuals and communities are not just discussing the future, but actively practicing it.

“I am essentially offering something that most institutions have never tried before, a culturally grounded futures lab for communities and organizations.”

Through these spaces, participants engage in:

Imaginative exploration
Collaborative design
Cultural storytelling
Future-focused dialogue
Creative problem-solving

The goal is not simply to generate ideas.

It is to shift mindsets.

To activate agency.

To build confidence in the ability to shape outcomes.

“I am essentially helping people practice the future together.”

Centering Black Imagination as a Catalyst for Innovation

A defining element of Dr. Richmond’s work is her intentional focus on centering Black imagination as a powerful driver of innovation and transformation.

Through Afrofuturism, she creates space for narratives that have historically been marginalized to become central to how the future is envisioned and built.

Her work reframes Afrofuturism as inclusive futurism.

A space where culture, creativity, and community intersect to produce new ideas, new systems, and new possibilities.

This is not about exclusion.

It is about expansion.

About recognizing that the insights needed to build better futures already exist within communities, and that when those perspectives are activated, they can drive meaningful and lasting change.

“Afrofuturism is inclusive futurism.”

From Inspiration to Transformation and Tangible Impact

Organizations and communities do not seek out Dr. Richmond for information alone.

They are seeking transformation.

They want to feel hopeful again.

They want to think differently.

They want to act collectively toward a future that feels both possible and within reach.

Through her work, participants often experience measurable shifts.

They move from limitation to possibility.

From disconnection to collaboration.

From passive engagement to active participation.

From uncertainty to clarity.

Her programs are designed to move beyond inspiration and into application, ensuring that ideas generated in these spaces can translate into real-world outcomes within organizations and communities.

Who She Serves and Why It Matters

Dr. Richmond’s work resonates with individuals and organizations who already sense that existing systems are no longer sufficient, but are searching for new approaches that align with the realities of today’s world.

Her clients often include:

Leaders seeking new models for innovation
Organizations ready to move beyond outdated systems
Communities working to rebuild connection and shared vision
Youth programs focused on empowerment and future readiness
Institutions seeking culturally relevant and engaging approaches

They are not looking for incremental improvement.

They are looking for transformation.

A Practice Rooted in Culture, Connection, and Lived Experience

At the core of Dr. Richmond’s work is a deep commitment to connection.

Her ability to engage across generations, cultures, and disciplines allows her to create spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and empowered to contribute.

Her work is not confined to formal structures.

It exists in conversations.

In shared experiences.

In moments where individuals begin to reimagine what is possible for themselves and their communities.

It is both strategic and deeply human.

The Deeper Impact: Restoring What Was Missing

At its deepest level, Dr. Richmond’s work is about restoration.

Restoring hope.

Restoring imagination.

Restoring connection.

Restoring agency.

Participants often leave her programs not just with ideas, but with a renewed sense of possibility and a belief in their ability to shape outcomes.

They begin to see themselves not just as participants in systems, but as co-creators of the future.

“I believe that the future is something we design together.”

Why Her Work Matters Now

In a time defined by rapid change, uncertainty, and systemic challenges, the ability to imagine and design new possibilities has become essential.

Not optional. Essential.

Dr. LaWana Richmond’s work offers a new way forward, one rooted in culture, creativity, and collective action.

Because when people can imagine something different, they can begin to build it.

And when communities come together to design that future, the impact extends far beyond any single idea.

It becomes something larger.

A shift.

A movement.
