Drawing on her own entrepreneurial journey and deep community engagement, Karen Bryant is helping emerging founders gain the mentorship, structure, and trusted support needed to build resilient businesses.

SAN DIEGO, Calif.

Launching a business often begins with excitement and ambition. But transforming an early idea into a sustainable company requires something far more complex, strategy, mentorship, and a community that understands the realities of entrepreneurship.

Karen Bryant has built much of her career around helping founders find exactly that.

Today she serves as Hospitality Community Engagement Manager at the Better Business Bureau (BBB), where she works directly with entrepreneurs, business leaders, and community partners to strengthen the small-business ecosystem through mentorship, networking opportunities, and education.

Her work supporting entrepreneurs is shaped by something many advisors lack: firsthand experience running a business.

An Entrepreneur Who Understands the Journey

Before joining the Better Business Bureau, Karen spent more than a decade operating her own event planning business specializing in weddings and social gatherings. The work required a balance of creativity and operational precision—managing vendors, logistics, finances, and client expectations while delivering memorable experiences.

That experience gave her an intimate understanding of the challenges entrepreneurs face when building something from the ground up.

Karen says her own entrepreneurial journey helped shape her commitment to supporting others who are navigating similar paths.

“My entrepreneurial journey has been fueled by a deep passion for helping small businesses grow and evolve while building a strong foundation for long-term success.”

That perspective now informs the work she does helping founders move from early momentum toward long-term stability.

Building Community Through the Better Business Bureau

In her role with the Better Business Bureau, Karen oversees one of the organization’s most collaborative spaces for business engagement.

She manages the BBB’s meeting and event space, which includes five conference rooms and an open collaborative area designed to host workshops, networking events, and educational programs for entrepreneurs and accredited businesses.

The space provides a professional environment where business owners can gather, learn from one another, and build relationships that support growth.

Karen’s responsibilities extend beyond managing the space itself. She also works actively to connect entrepreneurs with programs, resources, and networks that help them strengthen their companies.

Through this work, she has become a connector within the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The Vision Behind the BBB Breakthrough Accelerator

One of Karen’s most impactful initiatives is her involvement with the BBB Breakthrough Business Accelerator, a program designed to help early-stage entrepreneurs build stronger foundations for growth.

The accelerator supports founders who already have businesses in motion but need structure, mentorship, and strategy to scale effectively.

Karen describes the program as a transformational opportunity for entrepreneurs who are ready to grow their businesses with intention.

“BBB Breakthrough Accelerator is a 12-week, high-impact program designed for emerging small business owners who are ready to grow with purpose, resilience, and integrity.”

The program is designed for founders who:

• Have a registered business name
• Have been operating between six months and three years
• Are generating revenue
• Are located in Southern California, Central & Inland California, or Greater Arizona
• Are ready to grow through mentorship, accountability, and structure

Many participants enter the accelerator facing similar challenges, often working tirelessly to build their businesses without the guidance or networks that can help accelerate growth.

Karen frequently sees entrepreneurs who have been trying to navigate the complexities of business ownership entirely on their own.

Giving Entrepreneurs the Tools to Grow

The accelerator helps founders develop practical strategies that strengthen the core systems of their businesses.

Participants work on building:

• A clear business roadmap
• Financial clarity and operational structure
• Stronger brand positioning
• Strategic growth planning
• Expanded professional networks
• Confidence in their leadership and decision-making

Many entrepreneurs who complete the program also move toward BBB Accreditation, positioning their businesses to demonstrate credibility and ethical leadership within their industries.

Some participants eventually pursue the BBB4Good Trust Seal, which recognizes organizations committed to purpose-driven impact and responsible business practices.

Learning Through Mentorship and Collaboration

A defining feature of the Breakthrough Accelerator is its emphasis on collaboration and real-world learning.

Participants engage in expert-led workshops, one-on-one mentorship sessions, and peer collaboration, gaining insights they can immediately apply to their businesses.

The program is delivered in person at BBB campuses, creating an environment where entrepreneurs can build relationships while learning from experienced mentors and fellow founders.

Karen emphasizes that this collaborative environment helps entrepreneurs gain confidence as they navigate complex business decisions.

“Through expert-led workshops, one-on-one mentorship, and a dynamic peer network, entrepreneurs gain practical knowledge they can apply immediately.”

Igniting Opportunity Through the BBB Innovation Hub

Karen’s work also connects with the Ignite Innovation Hub, an initiative within the BBB designed to create opportunities for entrepreneurs to build relationships and discover new resources.

Through Ignite and related programs, founders gain access to education, mentorship, networking opportunities, and trusted resources that help strengthen their companies.

Karen says these programs reflect a larger commitment to supporting small businesses at every stage of their journey.

From startups to companies preparing to scale, the goal is to ensure entrepreneurs have access to the guidance and community support needed to succeed.

Why Karen Bryant’s Work Matters

Small businesses are often the backbone of thriving communities. They create jobs, foster innovation, and strengthen local economies.

But many entrepreneurs begin their journeys without access to the mentorship or networks that can help them navigate growth.

Through initiatives like the BBB Breakthrough Accelerator and the Ignite Innovation Hub, Karen Bryant is helping bridge that gap.

By connecting founders with practical education, trusted resources, and collaborative networks, she is helping entrepreneurs transform early-stage ideas into sustainable businesses that contribute to stronger communities.

Some contributors analyze issues. Bogdan “Bogey” Matuszynski has spent years working through them worldwide. Bogdan was born and raised in America's Finest City, San Diego, as a first generation Polish Mexican American, Bogdan grew up shaped by stories of his family rebuilding from the ground up. His family history led him to learn languages, study different cultures, and develop a fascination with geopolitics and how to become a more engaged member of the community. That curiosity evolved into a career centered on diplomacy, conflict transformation, and community social impact and resilience. Bogdan earned his undergraduate degree in International Security and Conflict Resolution, along with minors in Islamic and Arabic Studies and Latin American Studies from San Diego State University before receiving a Fulbright Grant from the U.S. Department of State to teach and develop community initiatives in Spain. He was later selected and awarded a Rotary Peace Fellowship and learned and conducted field studies in Asia. His travels to over 60 countries, including places where most people shy away, have brought him face to face with the realities of conflict and post conflict recovery. From the chaos of war zones and post conflict environments to the heart of diverse cultures, he has listened to personal stories of hardship, healing, and hope. Those experiences deepened his understanding of resiliency, peacebuilding, and the art of restoring trust in fractured communities. Bogdan is the Founder of iSERVE, International Service Education Research Vision Empowerment, www.iserveinternational.com. Through iSERVE, he supports students and professionals pursuing scholarships, fellowships, university admissions, grants, and international opportunities. He teaches diplomacy skills, international project development, and the craft of designing competitive applications rooted in preparation and authenticity. He has organized educational initiatives in the United States, Mexico, Egypt, Syria, Spain, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and online for participants around the world. Bogdan has supported cross sector violence prevention conversations and projects, contributed to disaster and housing relief during the 2024 San Diego flood response, and in 2025 was appointed to the City of Chula Vista Homelessness and Housing Commission . He serves as Peace Chair of the San Diego Coastal Rotary Club and contributes to regional mental health initiatives. He is also an Ambassador for the Institute of Economics and Peace. An internationally recognized award recipient, including The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow distinction for merit, Bogdan remains committed to service to others. Having once navigated complex systems without clear guidance himself, he is passionate about helping others access opportunities they may not see as possible. He is a connector and educator who bridges stakeholders across sectors to advance peacebuilding, community safety, and conflict transformation. He brings together volunteers, educators, civic leaders, business professionals, and international partners to design solutions that make communities safer and more resilient. Bogdan lives by the philosophy of “Conquering with Kindness,” helping others unlock their potential and purpose through service. For him, kindness is disciplined leadership based on a combination of courage, humility, and accountability.
