San Diego Weekly Standouts | March 2026 Honoree

Some people build businesses. Others build something less visible, but just as essential. They build connection. And in the moments when a community needs it most, that connection becomes a lifeline.

Algunas personas construyen negocios.

San Diego, Calif. —

For Katia Callahan, everything begins with a perspective that is both simple and profound.

“Life is a gift.”

But for her, that understanding does not exist in isolation.

It is directly connected to something even greater.

“My community. The gift of life.”

That phrasing is not accidental. It reflects how she sees the world. Life is not just something to experience individually. It is something to share, to build within, and to protect through connection.

Leading With Heart. Serving With Purpose. Strengthening Community

Liderando con el corazón. Sirviendo con propósito. Fortaleciendo la comunidad

This is not just a phrase. It is how she moves through the world, how she builds trust, and how she continues to show up for others every single day.

Katia does not operate from a business model.

In fact, she is clear about it.

She does not have a business.

What she has built is something different.

Something rooted entirely in people.

She serves as an Outreach Coordinator at WishWell in Chula Vista, supporting youth and families through coaching and empowerment, while simultaneously volunteering across seven community-based organizations, dedicating her time, energy, and presence to strengthening the community from multiple angles.

Her involvement spans education, small business advocacy, youth development, and local nonprofit support, reflecting a level of commitment that is both intentional and sustained.

Showing up across seven organizations is not occasional service. It is a sustained commitment that requires time, energy, and presence. It reflects a level of dedication that goes beyond participation and becomes a way of life rooted in giving.

“Leading with heart. Serving with purpose. Strengthening community.”
— Katia Callahan

A Connector in a Time of Crisis

When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted everyday life, Katia saw something unfolding in real time.

Isolation.

Uncertainty.

Small businesses struggling to survive.

And once again, she did not step back.

She stepped forward.

In March 2020, at the very beginning of the pandemic, she created Eastlake Food To Go, a Facebook-based community that would quickly become a critical support system for local vendors and families.

What began as a simple idea became something essential.

A place where businesses could be seen.
A place where families could find support.
A place where connection replaced isolation.

The Impact Was Not Theoretical. It Was Lived.

El impacto no fue teórico. Fue vivido.

The voices of the community tell the story best.

“I can’t tell you how much this helped our business… your vision brought our community together. That is the work of an angel.”

“Katia, you brought us all together.”

“This group helped us through COVID and is still going strong.”

“You have a heart of gold… you made people feel safe and welcomed.”

These are not just testimonials.

They are outcomes.

“Connection is what keeps people moving forward when everything else feels uncertain.”
— Katia Callahan

Beyond Volunteering: Building Human Infrastructure

Más allá del voluntariado: construyendo infraestructura humana

Katia’s work is often described as volunteering.

But that description does not fully capture what she is doing.

She is building human infrastructure.

Across the organizations she supports and the communities she connects, she is helping create systems of trust, collaboration, and opportunity that continue to function long after the initial moment of need has passed.

Her work supports local economies.

It strengthens relationships.

It creates pathways for people to grow.

Refuerza relaciones.

Genera oportunidades.

Connection Creates Impact

La conexión crea impacto

“Connection creates impact,” she says. “When people connect and collaborate, we create meaningful and lasting change.”

Her philosophy is simple, but powerful.

“My impact is in building stronger communities through compassion, collaboration, and support.”

Because when people feel seen, supported, and connected, they begin to move differently.

Her impact extended beyond connection. It helped businesses remain open, allowed others to grow, and gave some individuals the opportunity to generate income from home during uncertain times.

“When people feel supported, they stop surviving and start building.”
— Katia Callahan

One Sip and One Bite at a Time

Un sorbo y un bocado a la vez

“United we can and we will… one sip and one bite at a time.”

This is how Katia describes her work.

Not in grand gestures.

But in consistent, intentional actions.

Because community is not built overnight.

It is built daily.

Why Her Story Matters Now

Por qué su historia importa hoy

Katia Callahan represents a different kind of leadership.

One that is not driven by visibility.

But by care.

One that is not measured by scale.

But by impact.

She did not build something for herself.

She built something for others.

And continues to show up, every day, to make sure it keeps growing.

Everything she has built continues to reflect one consistent truth: connection, when created with intention, has the power to change lives.

Some contributors analyze issues. Bogdan “Bogey” Matuszynski has spent years working through them worldwide. Bogdan was born and raised in America's Finest City, San Diego, as a first generation Polish Mexican American, Bogdan grew up shaped by stories of his family rebuilding from the ground up. His family history led him to learn languages, study different cultures, and develop a fascination with geopolitics and how to become a more engaged member of the community. That curiosity evolved into a career centered on diplomacy, conflict transformation, and community social impact and resilience. Bogdan earned his undergraduate degree in International Security and Conflict Resolution, along with minors in Islamic and Arabic Studies and Latin American Studies from San Diego State University before receiving a Fulbright Grant from the U.S. Department of State to teach and develop community initiatives in Spain. He was later selected and awarded a Rotary Peace Fellowship and learned and conducted field studies in Asia. His travels to over 60 countries, including places where most people shy away, have brought him face to face with the realities of conflict and post conflict recovery. From the chaos of war zones and post conflict environments to the heart of diverse cultures, he has listened to personal stories of hardship, healing, and hope. Those experiences deepened his understanding of resiliency, peacebuilding, and the art of restoring trust in fractured communities. Bogdan is the Founder of iSERVE, International Service Education Research Vision Empowerment, www.iserveinternational.com. Through iSERVE, he supports students and professionals pursuing scholarships, fellowships, university admissions, grants, and international opportunities. Bogdan has supported cross sector violence prevention conversations and projects, contributed to disaster and housing relief during the 2024 San Diego flood response, and in 2025 was appointed to the City of Chula Vista Homelessness and Housing Commission . He serves as Peace Chair of the San Diego Coastal Rotary Club and contributes to regional mental health initiatives. He is also an Ambassador for the Institute of Economics and Peace. An internationally recognized award recipient, including The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow distinction for merit, Bogdan remains committed to service to others. Having once navigated complex systems without clear guidance himself, he is passionate about helping others access opportunities they may not see as possible. He is a connector and educator who bridges stakeholders across sectors to advance peacebuilding, community safety, and conflict transformation. He brings together volunteers, educators, civic leaders, business professionals, and international partners to design solutions that make communities safer and more resilient. Bogdan lives by the philosophy of “Conquering with Kindness,” helping others unlock their potential and purpose through service.
